What caught my eye was that they thought that Terry plus the Sac pick would only bring #17 or #18 in this draft.
No, they thought Rozier plus 27 would get us 17 or 18, not Rozier plus the Sac pick. I disagree with that that, Rozier alone probably gets us 16-18. Plus the 27 moves us a little higher.
so you think a 1 year rental of 0-11 Rozier is worth a middle lottery pick?
He's restricted, so it's not fair to refer to him as a rental. He also proved, while not an elite PG by any means, he's a solid player in many regards.

This was one of better thought out arguments on Rozier.  Good article.

I don't see the rationale for trading Rozier before or around draft time.

First, the Celtics are close to the luxury tax already and will be hard pressed to both sign Smart and retain Baynes and stay under the luxury tax line. That means you don't want to jump into the lottery in that environment and sign an expensive rookie this year, unless you're already convinced Smart is either gone or signing his qualifying offer ($6m I think).

Second, as the article points out, Rozier to some extent is insurance for the possible departure of Smart (and also Larkin). Why not wait until after restricted free agency (that is, until you know whether Smart will still be on the team) before figuring out what to do with Rozier?

My prediction is that Smart probably stays with the team, either via a new deal or qualifying offer, and then the Celtics trade away Rozier either for a future draft pick (maybe even a distant one like 2020, like what they did with Jeff Green) or for another player (like they did trading Bradley for Morris).

People seriously overestimating Rozier.  He was (mostly) great in the playoffs, but he's not even a starting guard on a good team IMO. He played way over his head but the same weaknesses that were there before are still there.  So I think #17-18 is about right.

Look at this way.  If I am another team, do I want to trade for a back up guard that I'll have to immediately overpay to keep or just take my own shot in the draft and see what happens?  Even is they swing and miss, no big deal.  I think that might be better than trading for Rozier.

Im thinking they not going to keep both Smart and Rozier..one of them is going
C/PF-Horford, Baynes, Noel, Theis, Morris,
SF/SG- Tatum, Brown, Hayward, Smart, Semi, Clark
PG- Irving, Rozier, Larkin

Terry Rozier is an excellent back up point guard. He has proven himself in the playoffs, he's a team guy, plays his butt off.

On the other side, he's a streaky shooter and his contract is coming up.

If you try one of these trades for this year's draft you have a lottery rookie deal for a guy who needs a couple years when the Celtics are hell bent for the NBA finals....thus,

Keep him for this year.

If Smart stays, you have Rozier, Tatum, Morris and Smart off the bench.

You are telling me you don't want Tatum, Morris, Smart and Rozier off the bench in the NBA finals?

You want some number 14th pick guy who might not be getting minutes instead of that?

Those players are absolutely NBA playoff veterans now. They all ground out three rounds playing starter's minutes against the Bux, Philly and the Cavs.

Of course, they lose Smart and this concept is over, but, remember this, Terry rozier is an excellent defender and that is probably the only element that will give the Celtics a chance against the Warriors next year.
