Wow.

Imagine a lineup of late 20's Irving and Davis with with 23 y/o Tatum? Please lord.

I would have to raise my expectations to five plus titles! 😁

People who are writing this off as nothing are being short sighted. This  is the 2nd davis rumor corroborated within days of each other

There's a lot of "energy" behind these rumors. It feels very real. Especially if you remember anthony davis within the past season or 2 saying if "the pelicans dont contend soon he will look elsewhere where the grass is greener"

Yeah, but where will "energy" be in a year?
lol True

The rose rule makes it impossible to trade for him but I think eventually Davis will have us in play as a trade destination. Whether danny pulls the trigger is up to danny
I thought the Rose Rule only made it impossible to trade for AD until Kyrie signs his extension? Or am I mistaken?

you are correct

I call bs.

This wreaks of the same clickbait reporting that had Jimmy Butler and Kyrie Irving plotting to join forces when, in reality, it was something one of them maybe mentioned 2 years ago in passing with no seriousness to it.

I feel like there's a bit more legitimacy to it, considering the doubling up of AD to Boston type reports in successive days. However, I am still very skeptical.

Hopeful though! ;D

It's obviously nice to hear but this story isn't actually saying anything - "eyeing" teams could mean a great number of things, many of which don't involve Davis actually planning anything. Especially when he's allegedly "eyeing" a free agency that's 3 offseasons away.
no. It absolutely means that he is 100% going to be a Celtic.  ;D

Kyrie isn't going to sign an extension. The "Rose Rule" conflict disappears once he signs his new contract next summer
I'm bitter.

It makes plenty of sense.

He's tired of losing playing for a trash organization.

The C's are loaded and are stacked for the future. Boston is one of the nicest cities in America, the C's are a class organization, Ainge and Stevens have great reps, players love it here, teams win titles all the time here.

The writing has been on the wall for years now that New Orleans would botch this up, they have signed a whole plethora of toxic contracts. He's a goner, and we are rightfully near (or at) the top of his list.

Anthony Davis

Q: I keep hearing the Celtics can’t trade for Anthony Davis because they have Kyrie Irving. Is this true? If so, why?
A: It is true. The CBA prevents a team from having two players on the same roster that were acquired via trade that had previously signed a contract extension under what is called the 5th Year 30% Max criteria. This criteria is commonly referred to as the “Rose Rule”, as Derrick Rose was the first place to make use of it.

How does this impact the Celtics? Boston acquired Kyrie Irving via trade last summer (if you don’t know that, you have a lot of reading and catching up to do!) and he had previously signed that contract as an extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers using the Rose Rule (I’m using Rose Rule because it’s shorter to type!). Anthony Davis also used the Rose Rule to sign his contract extension with the New Orleans Pelicans. As the Celtics would need to acquire Davis via trade, they are not allowed to do because both he and Irving signed using the Rose Rule and both would have been acquired via trade.

Q: But neither Kyrie or AD actually met the criteria for the Rose Rule! Doesn’t this mean Boston can trade for AD?
A: Unfortunately, no. Actually qualifying doesn’t matter. What matters is that it was the mechanism they were signed under. So the restriction still remains in place.

Q: Fine. Whatever! So, when can Boston trade for AD?
A: As soon as Kyrie Irving is no longer under his current contract. That means next summer, 2019, the restriction is removed. This is provided Kyrie Irving opts out of his current deal as expected. Boston could also trade for Anthony Davis right now, provided Irving was shipped out in that deal, or in another deal before the Celtics acquired Davis.

So we can trade Kyrie for Davis but they can't both be on the same team until Kyrie signs a new contract.

New Orleans isn't trading Davis until next summer at the absolute earliest so all of these things are funny.

Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson

Can't see a Davis trade to Boston happening until 2021. First, Kyrie has to opt out this year and sign a new contract to get rid of the Rose Rule. Second, I can't see Davis giving up his Supermax contract because he would lose close to $33 million. Then once he signs the Supermax, Davis is untradable for one year. So if Davis doesn't want to lose $33 million, he will be with the Pels until the summer of 2021. Here's a good article that explains it.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
Sheridan is no Woj or Shams, but it is interesting to see how much buzz has come up regarding AD and Boston, especially after Kyrie's commitment comments.

Chris Sheridan is a curmudgeonly bitter old basketball writer who has burned more bridges than he's built but he is pretty well plugged in and should be taken seriously.

I was going to write something similar to this. He has been misfed information (probably to benefit a trade package, or hurt opposing teams), which made him look bad.

But he is still plugged in.
