What's really refreshing about this team is that it's winning the way you win championships in this league.....offense.
Bad news man

2017 Celtics through 11 games:
Offensive rating: 105.5(12th in NBA)
Defensive rating: 95.9(1st in NBA)

2016 Celtics:
Offensive rating: 108.6(8th in NBA)
Defensive rating: 105.5(12th in NBA)
So then do we admit things like Avery Bradley and Jae Crowder weren't good defenders? And that Smart's has slipped?

This team could run last year's out of the gym.
I think Bradley and Crowder were severely overrated as defenders. Bradley was mediocre off ball and undersized. Crowder lost a step.

Marcus Smart is a great defender.

I held all these beliefs last year.

Its flatly wrong to say that tihs team has "won with offense". Of their 9 wins, theyve allowed the opponent over 94 points exactly 1 time.

That is winning with defense my friend. Now as Tatum grows and Irving settles into the offense and Mook gets comfortable, is this team better equipped to out-offense other teams than last years was? perhaps. This teams offense should be less fragile than last years.

However, to say that theyve won with offense, when their D has held 8 out of 9 teams under 95 points and has put up the best d rating in the league? thats just foolish.

I dont think you get quite the point..
Sure the offensive rating of last yr's team was better but the dynamics in the way this yr's team would score is miles better.
Last yr it was IT and get the heck outof the way and the occasional AB led the team in scoring...but this yr we can score in a variety of ways without being too over reliant to Kyrie...and if we need KI to go on beast mode he willingly obliges.

Besides..our offensive rating is by no means already a finish product...for all we know we can still improve in this department and still end up with a better offensive rating than last yr's team.

I much rather prefer this yr's team than last yr's even without GH as it is..
Offensive rating and defensive rating dont tell how good your offense and defense are. They say how good (roughly) your offense and defense have been.

Eja didnt say this team "will win" or "can win" he said they had won with offense. This isnt true.

Like I said above. Its possible that this team is more equipped to "win with offense" then last years team was. Thus far, however, they havent done that. In 8 of their 9 wins theyv held the opponenet to 94 points or less. Thats winning with defense.

Ive long felt that its not the "offense wins" or "defense wins". Good basketball on both ends of the floor wins. elite offenses will win a lot. Elite defenses will win a lot. If you can combine the two you win a ton. Lets do that.

If you were to take the first team all NBA Defensive Team....and clone it.

So now you have a team of 10 first team All NBA defenders.

They'd never beat a team composed of the All NBA 2nd and 3rd teams and would probably lose to the cloned 3rd team.

Offense wins in the NBA.  We have a better, smoother offensive team now that is more athletic and more dynamic.

As other teams attempt to defend it they get fatigued and suddenly have a hard time scoring on a team that is also quite good defensively.

This thread really comes off as bashing last year's team in praise of this year's. Is this team better? It's supposed to be and that doesn't diminish the thrill ride that was last year's team.
I don't know why anyone else watches the games, I watch them for the back and forth, ebb and flow of momentum and excitement with an extra dose of mythology; last year's team had that in spades and this year's team does too. With better, longer and more athletic players.
No it isnt.

You dont think a +9 net rating team (granted, small sample) is better than a +2.6 net rating team?

Mmm dunno about that one. If this team keeps playing the way its playing now, Im not sure how you can possibly say last year's team was better.
A few things here.

First, I messed up the bolding. Meant to highlight the "its supposed to be." My fault there. Bad communication.

That said, net rating through 11 games is a bit sketchy. Plus weve played the second easiest schedule in the league. Way too early to crown this team as better than last years 53 game winning version.

Its also way too early to say its not aswell. Especially when the only sample we have indicates the contrary.

It always amazes me that people will say offense (or defense) wins championships.  You have to play both ends at a high level to win.  TP for saying it so well.

Also, winning is refreshing.

That is absolutely NOT true Eja.  Lebron, Kawhi, Durant and G.A. will certainly all be playing on that all defensive team, your all NBA 2nd and 3rd teams will be playing without them......neither team will have Curry.......good luck.

The fact that you look at a team that has held opponents under 97 in 9/10 wins (an average of 92.5) and has the best defensive rating in the NBA with an average offensive rating and concluded that they are winning with offense, means you simply cant be reasoned with.

TP

It's almost as if people just casually glance over the fact that GSW has had one of the top defenses the last few seasons.  Sure, they've also had one of the best offenses as well, but without that defense they're just the Houston Rockets.  We've all seen how the Rockets have fared against the Warriors.

The pieces on this team  fit together pretty nicely. They play with nice chemistry even though most of the team is new.
