Maybe I'm a little bit biased because I'm from germany, but I think Theis can play a huge role for us this season!

Especially with our lack of big men I can see him averaging ca. 20 min a game.
I think all of us saw his highlights from Fiba EuroBasket 2017, even in the games in which he didn't have a "great" statline he was impacting the game on both sides of the floor.
He isn't a great scorer but he is a great finisher, rebounder, screen setter and defender, so basically the perfect glue guy to have on your team (like a chris andersen with the 2012 heat).

But the one thing he has on Andersen is his shot, you can't leave him open in pick and rolls or send him to the line all the time (rhyming accidentally  ;D) because he makes his free throws (80% for 41 games).

You remember that block from Summer league? He just isn't afraid to get dunked on!  :o

If everything goes right he could give us an edge in many games in the same way!

I have also thought he could bring that kind of Birdman energy.  If he can, that would be big for us off the bench.  We will see.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
People are probably underestimating how much of a role Theis will play for us this season. This will be especially obvious if Morris is suspended for a period of time.

After Horford, Baynes, and Morris (more of a swing), who do we really have for bigs on our roster? I would love Yabusele to light the world on fire or for Ojeleye to show he can lock down the PF spot, but both of them are rookies. I see Theis more in the Jonas role; his play style fits extremely well off the bench and at 25, he should be able to contribute right away.

I am happy to have an energetic big on the roster who can also knock down the outside shot/free-throws. In theory, he sounds like a great spark plug.

Agree he looks like a potential sparkplug - and maybe in time an upgrade on Jerebko. We'll have to see how he adapts to the NBA game, but I'm encouraged by his good play against several NBA players in Eurobasket, and that he's already been a pro for years.

If you ignore the context and just focus on the actual play of basketball, that block was one of the nastiest dunk blocks I have ever seen.

It would be so cool if Theis got that Birdman Mohawk!

I can't say I've watched a lot of Theis but since he's come on board I've tried to brush up on his just because I'm excited about the season.

While watching him 2 things standout.

1. Dude crashes the boards with some nice aggression if that makes sense. He doesn't seem to Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline. foot his task, he's going after it with some serious authority.

2. He runs the floor. Guys who drive me nuts are of the James Young mold where they find their spots and rotate to them and sometimes sit on them. Theis moves a ton and I'm bias to players who are keeping their defender moving and forcing other players interact with him.

He plays very well off Schroder which gives me hope he can translate to the NBA as a rotation player. Hoping he's upgrade over JJ and Zeller but time will tell.
ok fine

I'd put money on him being the most impactfull rookie on our team next year. His skill set and position are exactly what this team needs. Let's hope he pans out.

Our big 3 will attract double teams giving opportunities and open looks to players like theis. If he can take advantage of this and continue shooting the 3 at a high clip, he's going to have a great year

Let's just hope he is good enough to break into the rotation. He wasn't even a starter in the Bundeliga. Non-starters in Euroleagues don't usually become NBA rotation players.

Nah, he's about one arm's length worth of tattoos short... also, he looks like some sort of David Lee doppelganger in this picture.

Theis played the LV Summer League in 2014 and was largely unremarkable. He was 22 then, so the equivalent of a graduating college senior. Judging by his career trajectory, he's largely been the same player since. I find the unbridled optimism about his potential contribution to the team amusing -- he'll be in a dogfight for the Tyler Zeller role, and he's not necessary in the lead there either.

The only way I see that can possibly shoot him up the totem pole is if Marcus Morris gets convicted of battery and sentenced to prison time, but this looks like a long shot.
