Let's just hope he is good enough to break into the rotation. He wasn't even a starter in the Bundeliga. Non-starters in Euroleagues don't usually become NBA rotation players.
Theis played the LV Summer League in 2014 and was largely unremarkable. He was 22 then, so the equivalent of a graduating college senior. Judging by his career trajectory, he's largely been the same player since. I find the unbridled optimism about his potential contribution to the team amusing -- he'll be in a dogfight for the Tyler Zeller role, and he's not necessary in the lead there either.

The only way I see that can possibly shoot him up the totem pole is if Marcus Morris gets convicted of battery and sentenced to prison time, but this looks like a long shot.

No one on here sees him as a starter but just a hustle garbageman off the bench. When you play with this much talent on the floor all roll players have to do is play there limited roll. Look at some of the players the CAVS have that wouldn't have been able to play on another team. LeBron draws so much attention they only have to do very limited things. I also think you are underrating The BS effect. Brad seems to get something out of almost every player he coaches. Players look good under Brad but fall off the map after they leave the Celtics, cough, cough, Evan Turner, cough, cough....

I'd put money on him being the most impactfull rookie on our team next year. His skill set and position are exactly what this team needs. Let's hope he pans out.

I mean, I am hopeful he will be better than expected, but that is a little outrageous. Tatum will no-doubt be the most impactful rookie or else Ainge will be the bearer of many thrown stones.

Tatum should have way more of an impact than Theis but every team garbagemen hustle players. If Tatum hustles he can do all of what this does and bring more scoring. Having all of these long quick players is going to be very interesting. When was the last time the Celtics had one of the quickest teams in the league?

He played all of five Summer League games 3 years ago, and averaged 7 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks in 17 minutes. How is that bad?

Obviously he's a question mark, but you're really reaching to shoot him down. He was good in summer league, he's been good in Euroleague against the next best competition in the world. He won 3 German League championships all after that Las Vegas appearance, and all of his Euroleague experience is since then as well.

Even their starters sometimes do not become starters.

Don't think it is all that outrageous. Based on the needs of this team for a big that is a hustle garbage man type player, i.e grab rebounds, defend and make the shots that are manufactured by other players for him, he has a real chance to make an impact. Plus the fact that he is a "veteran" rookie at the age of 25 having played several pro seasons.

No doubt Tatum should be expected to be the better player and over time to far exceed the impact of Theis. But for next year only.... I'd say Theis has a good chance to impact this team towards wins more than Tatum does. Simply based on age, skill set and team needs.

TP. Agreed. No-one is claiming super star or even starter status for him. Just that he has the potential to make a positive impact as the 3rd real big on the team. Looks to me like an upgrade over Zeller and Jerebko. I'd say 9th or 10th man on the team. Tatum gets more regular time, but Theis impacts winning more, especially early.

As I've said, I actually think Theis can break into the rotation this season, but to say he has a good chance to impact wins more than Tatum either shows a lack of understanding of the word, 'good'  ;) or you have very little hope in Tatum producing much of anything this year.

I hope Theis surprises us all, but it is an uphill battle for him. Any team had the option to sign him and we were [easily] able to do so for the league minimum. Tatum was Ainge's #1 pick in the entire draft.

Looking at Theis' stats and footage, he reminds me a lot of a young Amir Johnson - which isn't a bad thing by any means.

Similar physical attributes, similar play style, similar skill set.  Possibly a slightly better shooter then Amir though. If he can give us Amir-like production/impact off the bench (I'm sceptical) then I'd honestly be pretty thrilled.

The only difference being that if a 25 year old Amir Johnson was playing in Euroleague I suspect he'd be averaging closer to 22 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocks.  NBA competition is a LOT stronger, and Amir when he was young could really play.

Struggling to earn more then 20 minutes in summer league is pretty bad.

Guys like Tatum, Smart, Olynyk, Rozier and Brown pretty much dominated summer league, and neither one of those guys has yet earned anything more than a fringe-starting role in the NBA thus far (Tatum we have yet to see though).

Even Phil Pressey looks pretty darn impressive in Summer League, and I'm not sure if he's even in the NBA anymore.

Still, I like the skill set that Theis displays so I'll give him a chance to show what he can do, and will keep an open mind in the meantime

Instead of insulting my grasp of the English language  ::), why don't you actually refute the reasons behind my statement?

Theis has a good, not great but not bad, better than average, chance to impact winning more than Tatum bc he is a) 6 or 7 years older and has been playing competitive basket ball longer. On a team w top end talent that has finals aspirations, that is significant. B) he fills a need for the team that Tatum does not. Tatum has shown to potentially have the most important skill in the NBA, he can create his own offense. The team has this in proven players; Irving, Hayward, Morris inefficiently, and to some extent Horford. That's 4 players at 4 different positions. The junkyard dog skill set that Theis potentially has can be attributed to Smart, a player that plays a different position.

I could be wrong but you haven't convinced me. Try again

I'm not sure about this but I think Tatum has been playing longer but maybe you mean pro-ball. Theis has only been playing 10 years he said in his media day interview. He played soccer before that. I'm excited about Theis my self and with how thin our big man rotation is and the fact that he can guard both front court positions, I think he'll get some time. I've watched him play some games against NBA players and thought he held his own. Theis is a role player with high energy.

Ya, thanks Liam. I did mean that he has been playing against stronger competition longer. A role player that plays a role the team could use. Exactly. TP!
