Anyone else feel this way or am I just the rare one on here who thinks both "this trade feels dirty" and "I hate this trade"?
Yeah, that was my first reaction and I still sort of feel that way. I know getting Kyrie is a coup for most of us, but to trade away IT (and the emotional fallout that followed), Jae, and the unprotected Brooklyn pick was a huge blow to this team in my view.
I also think this trade does some serious damage to Danny Ainge's reputation. Are we so sure free agents will want to sign here with him at the helm, following this deal? I mean, you can make a very good case that IT is the reason the Celtics were good enough to attract and to sign Horford and Hayward. And now you just forget that and move him for a younger model?
Now - I understand the cold and calculating rationale of trading IT. I think he was basically on the trading block all year after Durant decided to go to GSW, and the nails in the coffin were the hip injury and the Hayward signing. They were not going to bring him back at max money (or anything close to it) and put themselves in position for the repeater tax for a team that was still no guarantee to get past Cleveland, let alone GSW, with him at risk of a career-altering injury on every drive to the hoop.
I would like to believe that Danny had some conversation about an extension with IT's agent. If it comes out that ITs camp played hardball with Ainge, I have no further remorse for trading IT. But I find it really hard to believe IT wanted to play anywhere else but Boston, and if he was approached about a hometown discount he would have taken it.
In the end, I am trying to treat this like the Bradley trade (even with that BK pick included): a crappy move for Cs fans but a understandable move given that he wasn't going to be resigned.
It will be very hard to feel that way if the Cavs make the Finals with IT and/or that BK pick is top-5.
