Offensively Kyrie is a very similar player to Isaiah,  Needs to have the ball in his hands, takes a high volume of shots, gets to (and finishes at) the basket very well, crafty ball handler who can beat his man 1-on-1 and beat traps, also very capable scorer from midrange and a quality three point shooter (probably a bit better from outside then Thomas) and also extremely clutch.  Capable playmaker, but has a shoot first mentality.  Poor defensive player.   

For all intents and purposes he basically is the same player as IT, except that he is 6'4" (instead of 5'10"), is 25 years old (instead of 28), and has a couple of years left on a pretty team friendly contact (versus Thomas, who would have required a max after this season).

1) don't look at the deal the wolves for for butler. We would have had to give up one of the lotto picks for him. I mean technically so did the timberwolves in Dunn although he's garbage. Same with PG13.

2) kyrie Irving is a major upgrade to IT defensively. I used to think that he was only a slight upgrade offensively, but honestly after watching him play, he's so much more than dropping 30 a night. He can score 50 if he wants to PnR ball hog. He's just a winner in every aspect. He gets the win. He's making everyone on the team better. Horford looks like an MVP. The lotto picks are killing it. Even Aron Baynes looks like a stud because he gets 5 open shots a game. Sorry, I can't understand anyone that can't see the difference between kyrie and IT at this point. I can only assume you aren't watching the games and only comparing stat lines.

This. Obviously Kyrie has been a pleasure to watch and has surpassed my expectations, but we still need to win championships. The Kyrie trade looks like a huge step forward though.

Its not black or white. Esp given that only 1 team can win it all and there are lots of other factors that can hinder teams from winning one. What's important is you are in a better position after all the moves you make.

About that guy who said he'd rather let IT walk and get the no. 1 pick in the draft. First of all, you dont even have a guarantee you'd get the no.1 pick. Second you are also not sure that whoever you drafted will become as good as IT or Kyrie. 3rd, too much youth will make the team less competitive, affect signing of free agents due to worst records and unproven players, and lastly, it would take some time before your players develop, and by that time that they all do and you become a contender, they would all be coming out of their rookie contracts.

I think most people understood the trade once we heard that Thomas' injury was more serious than had been revealed at the time. His injury, combined with his upcoming contract situation meant his value was extremely low, especially because there would be only half a season to evaluate his post-injury state.
