Ainge has to come out of this with Butler and Hayward or this is just a failure.

Getting Jackson and having to keep the lakers and kings protected picks is just not enough

I think (hope) it may come down to this:

Would you rather have
1) Fultz and Hayward
OR
2) Butler, Hayward, and Jackson/Ball/Tatum

absolutely #2

How does #2 happen. We'd need to trade big piece for Jimmy and also clear another 19 mil in cap space.

JPotter outlined it somewhere. You trade AB and Crowder, and I think you're right there. Butler's contract is only $15 Million, so AB and Crowder about match the salary. The extra $1.7 million in space created by moving down from #1 to #3 accounts for the difference.

EDIT: My bad, that would involve the trade of #3, as JPotter and Bobshot outline below.

Which gets to be an overpay (no way I give up those two guys plus Jackson or Tatum for Butler..maybe for George if he were guaranteed to stay)...
they might take Bradley Crowder, Lakers and Sac picks, considering how well Bradley did in his matchup with Butler...Rondo and Bradley were a good pair briefly.  If they want to ask for the moon again for Butler hope Ainge says no again.

Maybe Ainge wanted Jackson all along and just got some extra to move down. Not sure there is some sort of bigger trade coming.

Of course, Jackson could go 2nd, and neither Ball nor Jackson want to come to Boston, so that's problematic.

Why is everyone so hush hush on the best player from last year ? Tatum.

WOJ: The 2018 Lakers pick to BOS has protections on top and bottom that could keep it in Philly, and if so, then 2019 Kings' pick goes to Boston.

And now I'm much less enthused.

Terrible trade. So now we don't even get the Lakers pick unprotected.

The question that I have is this.
What happens to Jaylen Brown minutes if they go after Hayward and Bulter? That is why I do not think Danny is going to go after Butler. Brown showed me enough this year to where I think he could be on Butlers level in a season or two. So why would Danny throw all his chips in for Butler?
Paul George is a unique talent, but I do not think Danny would trade for him unless they have a handshake agreement on an extension. Danny is not an idiot.
Is it possible that Ainge is collecting these assets and waiting until the trade deadline next year. Maybe he wants to see how free agency goes before making a trade. What if Boogie and Davis are not panning out. Cousins is having turmoil and the Pels want to blow things up. Danny is first in line for Davis with two potential top 5 picks. Think about this starting 5
IT, Smart, Hayward, Horford, Davis
With Rozier, Brown, Zizic off the bench.
That lineup can compete with the Warriors

It's reverse-protected. If it doesn't convey (because it's not good enough for us) then we get Sacramento's swap the next year. Still a good deal.

You gotta think Ainge already has a deal in place for someone else if he accepted this trade. He is in total control , with all the leverage, so he wouldn't trade the #1 pick unless he has an extensive plan already worked out for the incoming assets.

Whatever deal that is, will it beat the ultimate boss in Golden State for, say, the next four years though?

Because we've just given up 8 years of Markelle Fultz, who could have helped us compete AND be a franchise cornerstone for the future.

This signals to me Ainge is willing to go at the Warriors.

Right now, I'm just gonna look at it how I would have before the lottery: if someone had said we got the #3 pick, I would have been okay. If they said we got the #3 pick, PLUS a good future first, I would have been ecstatic. Maybe even more excited than when I saw we got the 1st pick (since this was before I got totally invested in Fultz)

But we'll see. No point in trying to form an opinion now (and in 5 minutes when the next conflicting report comes out, then again in another 5 minutes, etc.), so I'll just wait until the details get released for real to form an opinion about it. For your own sanity, I suggest that some of you do the same
I'm bitter.

So essentially it's just one pick that the Celts get in exchange for moving down two spots.

Unless we're looking at 4-30 protection on the Lakers pick, this is Nets trade bad.

I'd prefer George, but we'll see.

It's a good deal if you think Fultz is not that much better (or even better at all).  Himmeslbach tweeted the Celtics think there are 4 elite prospects of about the same level in the draft.

The protections as described kind of make it safer than getting two protected picks I guess?  I'm not sure.
