Reports say that Detroit is looking to trade its #12 pick for a "win-now" player.
We would probably have to add some non-negligible pieces as sweetener (Demetrius Jackson and/or multiple second round picks?) but this seems like a trade that makes sense for both teams. What do you guys think?
Why BOS does it
- In order to sign a max free agent Boston needs to cut salary. Swapping out Marcus Smart's fourth-year contract for the first year of the rookie scale for #12 should result in savings of approximately $2.2m. This opens a path for us to get to max space by stashing Yabusele and renouncing the following players: Olynyk, Johnson, Zeller, Jerebko, Mickey.
- It also clears our guard logjam and allows us to add big depth with our pick. Markkanen, Collins, and Anunoby are all potential frontcourt rotation players that may be obtainable at #12.
Why DET does it
- It does not look like Reggie Jackson is going to work out at Detroit long term, and this gives them the opportunity to make Smart their point guard of the future. Smart-KCP would instantly be one of the best defensive backcourts in the league, a physically-imposing, switch-happy monster. Even if Smart never becomes a viable offensive player, this at least gives Detroit an identity to work with. If Smart develops, Detroit wins this trade hands down.
- #12 is right around where point guard talent starts to dry up in this draft, with Ntilikina being the only prospect who could potentially drop this far. Even if Detroit manages to draft Ntilikina, he is very raw and probably ends up being a worse version of Smart for the majority of this Detroit team's "contention window."
- Detroit is severely lacking in depth and whatever sweeteners they get from us will help shore up the back end of their roster.
