Reports say that Detroit is looking to trade its #12 pick for a "win-now" player.

We would probably have to add some non-negligible pieces as sweetener (Demetrius Jackson and/or multiple second round picks?) but this seems like a trade that makes sense for both teams. What do you guys think?

Why BOS does it
- In order to sign a max free agent Boston needs to cut salary. Swapping out Marcus Smart's fourth-year contract for the first year of the rookie scale for #12 should result in savings of approximately $2.2m.  This opens a path for us to get to max space by stashing Yabusele and renouncing the following players: Olynyk, Johnson, Zeller, Jerebko, Mickey.

- It also clears our guard logjam and allows us to add big depth with our pick. Markkanen, Collins, and Anunoby are all potential frontcourt rotation players that may be obtainable at #12.

Why DET does it
- It does not look like Reggie Jackson is going to work out at Detroit long term, and this gives them the opportunity to make Smart their point guard of the future. Smart-KCP would instantly be one of the best defensive backcourts in the league, a physically-imposing, switch-happy monster.  Even if Smart never becomes a viable offensive player, this at least gives Detroit an identity to work with.  If Smart develops, Detroit wins this trade hands down.

- #12 is right around where point guard talent starts to dry up in this draft, with Ntilikina being the only prospect who could potentially drop this far. Even if Detroit manages to draft Ntilikina, he is very raw and probably ends up being a worse version of Smart for the majority of this Detroit team's "contention window."

- Detroit is severely lacking in depth and whatever sweeteners they get from us will help shore up the back end of their roster.

Would be nice. If markannen drops to 12 it would be almost perfect. Other good Bigs are available at this area of lotto too

I don't love it. We're likely going to lose AB in free agency or via trade. Smart is more important than the #12 pick is likely to be.

We would get value back. We let way too many guys walk at FA instead of trading them 1-2 years before: Sully, ET, Bass, KO, and etc.

But are we realistically going to resign/extend him in 2018, especially with Fultz (PG that can play SG) and Jaylen (SH that can play SF)?

I think resigning him is realistic at this point, yes.

This makes way more sense than the Crowder, Rozier, and 37 proposal in the other thread.

I'd probably consider it if we swing for Giles with the pick, who I still think has huge potential if he stays healthy.

That'd also allow us to keep AB for the moment and decide about who to keep after getting a full year of the IT, AB, Fultz trio.

I'm not sure that Detroit would do it, though. They'd probably do it for AB, but that's more complicated with salaries. I wonder if AB could get us both Morris and the 12 pick? That might be worth looking into, because he'd fill the void at the 4 that we have even if we sign Hayward this summer.

Detroit will only take back 3pt shooters to put around Drummond.

Sorry everyone. More likely to go for Crowder.

Sorry everyone. More likely to go for Crowder.

Incumbent PG he'd be replacing is a career 32% three-point shooter. His backcourt mate is a career 33% three-point shooter. Obviously Smart is next-level horrible at shooting, but it's not as if SVG only plays with JJ Reddicks in the backcourt.

We all know what Crowder is. A team like Detroit needs to roll the dice on young guys with potential upside instead of just stocking up on really good role players.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I guess it depends on how committed Danny is to re-signing Avery. If we are losing both Smart and AB, then I have my reservations. We will be in pseudo-win-now mode if we sign Hayward, it would be sort-of counterproductive to then lose AB, Smart, and maybe even KO without replacing them with some veteran presence.

I agree that AB makes the most sense in a deal and I would love to take back the slightly less evil Morris twin or Stanley Johnson as trade filler, but that would require something else from our side.

The thing is, they want to get better. Better shooting is almost mandatory, and as we see makes everyone else better.

The Detroit fans would LOVE Marcus Smart though. Absolutely love him. Big league. Love.

I mentioned in the other thread looking to package Smart and Crowder if we know we're getting Hayward. Detroit fans would appreciate them both.

The more I think about this I'm realizing you'd probably have to throw in at least Rozier into the deal given how Smart's value will be depressed due to impending RFA (see, e.g., Nerlens Noel).  At that point, it may even be the "Terry Rozier Trade", not the "Marcus Smart Trade." Rozier's extra year of team control makes him more valuable despite being the worse player.
