Thoughts on Melo?

How do people feel about Melo? He's obviously getting older and pretty flow, but the guy can score. If we got him without giving up too much I think he would provide some scoring that we could really use.  He could help on the boards too. Leaving NY might give him some new life.

What do you guys think?

Pass. Melo has about 2 good years left. While I wouldn't mind that if he came cheap I know the C's can't really invest a lot in him because he is not a top 15 player.

C's are best if working on a slow build keeping Smart, Brown, Nets 2017 and 2018 picks while using cap to compete right now in IT, Horford and Hayward.

I certainly think his offense and size could really help us "now" but not sure how much his salary would hamper us from making a big move.

He'll cripple our cap space, and he's not enough to really put us over the top. He's a short term prayer.

I've been on the Melo train since the deadline.

Also sounded like Melo wanted to play here (we were one of the few teams that he would waive his no trade clause for) and that our coaching  staff wanted him:

While I would like Hayward/Milsap "for free" (we still have to renounce players), getting Melo would be a great consolation prize.

I think Melo to the Cs is a good move and fit for us for a lot of reasons:

1. The rebounding he will bring
2. The scoring he will bring
3. His motivation to prove himself a winner (last chance)
4. His surrounding cast will be better and deeper than any he's ever had.
5. He will be CHEAP and WILL NOT cost us either BK pick, AND we can probably get one of their young centers (O'Quinn PF/C?) in the bargain: Phil wants him gone BADLY.

IT/Melo/Horford compete now.......... Brown/BK'17/BK'18 compete in the future.

Melo will be our bridge to the future.

Well if we don't sign Hayward or Griffin my next preference for a scorer is Gay or Gallinari in free agency.  I think I would take both over Melo because;

 1) you don't have to give up assets to get them.

 2) their salaries will come cheaper than Melo's 26 mil(not exactly sure how absorbing Melo's contract will affect our pending free agents) while allowing us to make other FA moves, and

 3) Melo will be 33 next year and his game is declining every year.  You risk his game declining much more.  Gay and Gallinari are no world beaters but you should expect much of the same being in their late 20s.  If we got one of them I'd also like to see if we can get an upgrade over Amir.

Something like Gay and Zach Randolph to replace Jonas and Amir. That's something like my plan B if we don't sign a max player.

I've warmed to Melo, and would be glad to see him brought in. He is a player that can stop a 26-0 run. We need that.

 But I'm warming to Gay even more on account of cost, and also seeing what Iggy has done in GS as a former allstar wing. I just see Gay fitting in, while Melo sort of requires everyone else to "fit around" though the talent clearly favors Carmelo.

And I think a bunch of lower picks gets it done, with maybe Smart (my least fav guard) and maybe another guy.  I'd pretend to fight like heck to keep Crowder, but he's a nothing special role player so...

But Jesus, for some lower picks and role players, go for it. He would make us better.

Good insight into both Gay and Melo. I agree that Gay will fit in well with Stevens system.

He's also younger and until his Achilles, a better injury risk than Melo. He will also cost less than Melo, but not by a lot, and, since this will be his last big contract, he'll want four years. He opted out of his $13mil with the Kings. If ET and others got what they got, Gay will get 20+ for 4, which takes him to 35 years old at the end.

I think we can get Melo and O'Quinn or Hernangomez for Crowder, a S&T'd KO, Zeller for ballast and whatever non-BK picks we need to throw in (our first next year, Clips pick). Knicks need him gone to get on with it.

He is getting old and showing decline in some areas, I think people who want him do not have much foresight.  Would he address an immediate need, yes.   Would he last long, no.   Only if he is cheap folks.

He will be cheap.......they know they have to move him,  we are the only team that can be competitive in the playoffs that he will go and have the assets to get him.

He may be aging, but he's still a talented scorer.  I don't care if he only plays sixty games a year,  and if you have to rest him on back to back's you do it , as long as he plays in the playoffs.

If we miss out on a big FA signing, then definitely, assuming we trade very very little to get him.

I actually like the idea that he is only on a two year contract. That and the fact that he would be our new PF (a position of need). I really don't see the harm in bringing him in. He would REALLY take the load off IT and would only have a minor effect on our IT/Bradley/Smart FA signings since we would only have a ridiculous cap for one season.

His expiring along with some of our other young assets might come in handy in a trade a year down the road, too.

If nobody signs here and you can get Melo for nothing more than a lottery protected 1st, you do it.
