My thoughts on Melo ?

Self-centered loser, plays minimum defense, does not move the ball on offense, Headcase.

No Thank You.

Pass. Melo has about 2 good years left. While I wouldn't mind that if he came cheap I know the C's can't really invest a lot in him because he is not a top 15 player.

C's are best if working on a slow build keeping Smart, Brown, Nets 2017 and 2018 picks while using cap to compete right now in IT, Horford and Hayward.

2 good years is all we need - that's about all that's left on his contract, and his decline would occur about the same time as Horford.

Once they both drop off and their contracts expire, we would have about $55M in cap space coming off the books so we can chase a max contract guy.

In the meantime having Melo added to this roster would make us an instant contender, and would strike immediate fear into Clevleand and every other team in the East.

If it's a discount, gotta trade for Melo.

Otherwise let NYK rot.

If we see 2016 Rio Olympics Melo, then yes!

But we still need a second go-to scorer besides IT4...so Melo would work. Plus he could rebound, and he'll get a much better surrounding core than say his Denver and New York days.

RIP.

oh you mean Carmelo? other then in the Olympics he has been a poor team player(you can get away with that in collage if you are as good as he is, which is how he won that championship) even in the Olympics anything less then 08 Carmelo probably is not a player you want to bring here. then again im not sure i would take 08 Carmelo either.

I would consider him if you strike out on everyone else in free agency because you'd only have him for 2 years.  But you would have to retool the team a bit and understand that he doesn't play defense - though maybe Brad could coax it out of him.  He's played well for Team USA so he may still have it in him to be a decent 2 way player.

He would solve a lot of the cold spell problems this team has and he would be a good fit for the way they play - offensively at least.  If you have him you could make Crowder a full time 4, and add Zizic   Zizic would be the key to the rebounding though - so if he's not ready to join the rotation (and chances are he's not) you're back to having a rebounding problem.

I don't think we will be under the cap at all even with Melo and Horford coming off the books when you factor in extensions for our other players.

They will be expiring contracts though we can use in a future trade.

Self centered  drama queen who’s every team in the NBA has failed to live up to expectations and his tenure there ended badly. He plays ZERO defense and as much as I like I.T you can’t have two starters who can’t play D. He’s a black hole with the ball and would kill any ball movement. Basically I think he’s one of the most overrated players in the last 20 years and I want nothing to do with him. Even if the Knicks paid us to take him.  And at this point they probably would.

I agree with the "no" crowd but for slightly different reasons. I'm steering away from the personal stuff.

Melo is showing major signs of decline. While his ppg was still decent last year, the tell-tale signs of a major dropoff are all there. His rebounding rate dropped to a 12 year low. His eFG numbers were poor. His FTA rate was at a career low.

What does all this mean? It shows his vaunted athleticism is considerably worse than it was in years' past. He can't get to the boards and he can't get to the line nearly as well. He's a massive defensive liability who is a volume shooter and we already have one of those in IT. In short, hes not a good fit. He doesn't fix much for the Cs now and the decline in his game may makes him no better than a  2nd option next year and that's a best-case scenario. The Cs can do that for cheaper by getting Gallinari in FA.

Add in that his deal is a cap killer - $27m the next two years - meaning that acquiring him closes off all other options during that time frame.
Jaylen Brown will be an All Star in the next 5 years.

If we can't get Hayward and can't get Griffin (or decide to pass on him), I say go for it.  He is flawed, no doubt.  But I think he can help us in the next two years with his scoring. After that, we move on.

Just say no.  Can't play PF, can't or won't rebound, too high of a contract, plays isolation ball (needs the ball in his hands to perform best)

Oh man, a Melo thread I haven't commented on!

I'm in. Two years of Melo wouldn't restrict our cap space like 4 years of Hayward (who's not gonna leave) or Griffin (who I'd bet is going to OKC.) Yes Melo is still a huge contract with $26,243,760 in 2017-18 and a player option of $27,928,140 in 2018-19, but I'd rather pay less for Melo for 2 years than more for either of the aforementioned players for 4, who will be making $30,600,000 year one.

A trade for Melo could be built around Zeller, Crowder, Olynyk s&t, 2018 BOS 1st, 2017 MIN 2nd, and the 2017 CLE 2nd.

I'd also attach a contingent trade of the 2017 BKN 1st for Porzingis and the 2017 NYK 1st.

2017-18 would look like:

Thomas/Smart/Rozier/Jackson
Bradley/Monk (2017 NYK 1st)/Green (vet min)
Anthony/Brown
Porzingis/Yabusele/Mickey
Horford/Zizic/Johnson (vet min)

Maybe at the trade deadline.

Otherwise, keep the flexibility in case Butler or George (or some other unknown star) pushed their team to trade them to Boston at a reasonable price.
