Blame the current sports media.   They have trained all of us to pay the most attention to the most outrages and over the top headlines and quick takes.

It was only a matter of time that it took a strong hold on the fans.

You mean they're not guaranteed a trip to the Finals after they beat the Warriors on the road tomorrow?  ::)

Chicken or egg?  If fans didn't respond to the hot-take stories, media wouldn't focus on them.

When the Celtics lose a game: About 2-3 "Trade IT" threads, some "our bigs are SOFT" threads, some "the world is ending" threads, some "we are first round exits" threads.

When the Celtics win a game: Some "Give IT an extension" threads, some "Jaylen is the next DWade or Butler" threads, some "We will catch the Cavs for that 1 seed" threads, some "this team is making the ECF - GUARANTEED" threads. ETC. ETC.

And this is after only A SINGLE win or loss in the regular season. Sure, if the team went on some 10 game losing streak, I could somewhat understand the premise of the threads. But you saw so much happiness after a win over LAL. Suddenly we lose to Phoenix (in a bad way, I know), and the world seems to be ending on these boards and suddenly we are talking "Ainge is a moron, the world is ending, trade IT and Horford while you still can!"

Now watch, if we end up beating LAC tonight, everyone will forget about the Suns loss and talk about how we are back on track and how we never doubted this team!   :P

It's almost as if the Celtics aren't the 2 seed (40-23), don't have Brooklyn Picks coming their way, and don't have a great young core going forward. A shame really..

When you're a rabid Celtic fan, and you have been for years and years, and you take the time to actually connect with a Celtic blog, that's what you do...over react, thats the fun. lol

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Prob affects the topics  by giving those of whatever opinion some supporting evidence. I'd call that normal. And it's more convenient for those who don't have the time to pour their very lives into developing a researched thesis (complete with advanced stats and the reason for selecting those stats to support the thesis and discussion of the underlying validity and reliability of the stat indicated, with comparative examples of well known - or not - players from other teams).

We can just simply say:  See!  He stinks/is a bum/overrated/superhero/whatever.

TP - I was coming on here to say something similar.

People have varying opinions about the team, individual players, management, etc. Somebody who is not so certain they want to sign IT to a 5 year max may feel it is a good time to comment after he he says something questionable to the media or has a bad game. That same person can't start a thread if the Cs are on a 10 game winning streak with IT leading the way so they wait for a more appropriate time.

I think people around here are generally excited about Brown's future and doubt this current group of players can get by the Cavs in the ECF. Everything else is up for grabs.

Don't completely agree with the OP and I have been here a decade. After a single loss this blog gets very noisy with pessimism and usually stays that way until the Celtics win. After a single win the blog is much more quiet and the over the top optimism group won't usually come out unless a rookie or little used player has a big game or until the win becomes a winning streak. Overall, in my experience, the blog is much noisier after losses.

Yeah I'll admit compared to the regulars here I'm relatively new.

The bold parts I completely agree with. Thing is with Smart + Brown there always seem to be over the top optimism after each win.

I have to agree, and it's the reason there is a Celtics Blog message board in the first place.

I'll also remind the OP that it is not necessarily the same people starting threads after wins and losses.  OP makes it sound like we are schizo- but that only applies to a few "special" posters, not all of us.   ::) ;D

I think expectations  for this team are directly related to where you think we are in the rebuilding process.  I still think of Jaylen as step one so I'm very pleased at this point.

If you start losing, better start tanking.

I have always felt that Smart was the pawn E4 move. Hard earned pick after a loosing season.

The sky is falling crowd always freaks out after losses.   It is not everyone but some panic to be sure and others think that one good game means future all star.
