Like, say you make a blockbuster trade for Butler and settle on a decent trade for Melo (with his dwindling trade value).

I'm expecting Bradley, Zeller AND/OR Amir gone in the trade (and some other young pieces/lots of picks).

So does an IT/Butler/Carmelo/Olynyk/Horford starting five along with a bench of Brown/Smart/Crowder/Jerebko/etc. make noise in the playoffs? Or is that a really bad team that doesn't fit together.

With defensive players around him, Melo could focus on his own thing, and that's scoring, while Butler and his elite two-way presence can be a big factor. Essentially you ease the pressure off of IT, and have three legit scorers on the team with a good bench as well. I think that team definitely overtakes Toronto but still a little bit away from Cleveland/Golden State. Only real issue is still the "BIGS" problem (rebounding).

Thoughts?

Nope = Melo is a bad fit. Needs too many touches when there are already two high usage players in IT and Jimmy Butler already on board. Better off with more of a facilitator type. A defender / rebounder. Rather than a 3rd volume scorer.

So basically a Butler + BIG package (BIG = Noel, Ibaka or someone sort of similar to that rebounding 4/5).

Yeah, if we landed Butler and gave up no more than Bradley and a BKN pick (an overpay in my mind), then I would rather go after Ibaka or Noel - assuming the cost was the same as Carmelo (LOW).

I am still not totally opposed to Carmelo and he would allow us to keep our BKN picks and core players. In this case, I still may go after Noel or Ibaka.

Completely theoretical.  I can't see this happening and still keep all of Brown/Smart/Crowder.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
They would be excellent. Shooting at every position. Melo at PF would stretch floor. His D would be fine because we are winning and because he's not the only one carrying the load offensively every night.

His defensive issues are completely over exaggerated here.

That being said, we'd lose one or both of crowder and AB and Smart or Jaylen.
If we could do this and keep Crowder, Jaylen and Smart with Butler at SG, Crowder at SF and Melo at PF and Brown+Smart off bench we'd be nasty.

IT
Butler
Crowder
Melo
Horford

Smart
Brown
KO
Jerebko
+min vet bigs

We could take Cleveland to 7 games. Probably not GSW tho.
Hence my hesitation to put such a team together.
Id rather get Love in a 3 team trade and send Melo to CLE considering Love's age.

Read that last line again. One more time.

A lot of people bent on wrecking this team's rebuild.

Maybe, but you could probably keep two of them and trade Bradley as well.

Judging by what the Knicks are asking of LAC.. it doesn't look like much at all.

I did make a forum post just hours ago saying the Celtics should "stay the course" lol.

But this was just a theoretical question.

That's the problem, though - it's not, and we know it's not. Philly wanted the third overall pick for Noel and filler. Orlando traded their best player and a lottery pick for Ibaka. New York's considering Austin Rivers and filler for Carmelo. Atlanta wanted a Nets pick for Horford, and then Millsap. One of these things is not like the others.

Give me Butler and Ibaka.

Maybe the people bent on destroying this ball club by adding Melo will sober up at some point.

You wanna trade Jaylen for Ibaka, have fun. I'll pass.

Remind me again where I said that - you can't. Lots of folks around here these days struggling with reading comprehension.

You want Melo. I'll pass.
