IT scored career high 52 tonite. Took half the total shots, scored almost half the points. Only Horford was also in double figures. They beat a bad team, Miami, at home by just 3 points. Outrebounded again. IT had zero assists.
The media is all over "star" IT on the tweets. A great individual performance by IT. But I'm not sure what it means for the Celtics.
Thank you. This is the only point I'm trying to make around here. IT is a wonderful players. Fun to watch. But the Celtics are more than just him. And if moving him or adjusting the lineup means the team becomes better, then good grief do it. Someone else will come along to wow us.
Thank you for stating the obvious, but explain to me why the critics of this Celtics team will constantly chirp about the need for a "star" that the Celtics don't have, and follow that up by saying IT is not a "star" (whatever that word means).
Is basketball about the team or is it about having the best player on the court? In the NBA is it about having one of the 5 to 10 best individual talents - as judged by fans/stats - or is it about how you make your team better as judged by wins/losses? If it is about having one of the top 10 guys then we are straight out of luck because those guys are not available to us, given that the other teams know everything we do about their value.
The reason IT sets off a great debate is because there are people who, for example, would trade him straight up for John Wall, because Wall is perceived as a "star" and IT isn't. I mean, how could IT be a start if he was drafted 60th by the Kings and PHX traded him for Marcus Thornton and the 30th pick in the draft?
Then there are people like me who look at the records of the teams that these "stars" play on, or look at their team/lineup stats, and ask if this player is making them better, making them into a contender. IT has clearly done that here (though to be fair so has Jae Crowder and this year, Al Horford.)
So yeah, the Celtics are more than just IT. Every team is more than just one player. But the great teams need great players. We have one.
