Credit for getting a little better as a pg but oh my gosh he looks like a bowling ball, and not in a good way.  Super slow and not at all explosive.  Three more years and he'll be able play tackle in the nfl.

10.6℅ Bodyfat at 227 pounds at the combine? What's your bodyfat 20.0%??

He's the hardest working guy on the team, he's the anti Sullinger. If he wasn't 230 pounds he couldn't guard practically anyone.
If you must know, and this is the truth, I am 46 and in better shape than most people who are in their 20's.  Still get stares from the ladies and haven't missed a workout in over four years. What's my body fat?  I have no idea but I would guess it anywhere near 20%.

All that said, what the heck does it matter what kind of shape I am in?  I'm not a professional athlete getting paid to stay in shape.  Finally, did you actually quote smarts combine measurements?  Dude, I'm not talking about that Marcus smart.  I'm talking about the rolly polly I saw yesterday.

I assume you mean no where near 20% hehehe. But in all seriousness 10.6% for a 20 year old professional basketball player is very high IMO. Common to see abs once you get below 10%.

the bold essentially invalidates this though. that was in 2014. he looks chubby today. heck, in the clip i posted awhile back he's even walking weird. make what you will of it, but it doesnt look like hes in elite shape.
I could very well see the Hawks... starting Taurean Prince at the 3, who is already better than Crowder, imo.

This board continues to be amazing.  Today suddenly Smart is a big fat mess.

well, he doesnt look great on the court. he looks good, but not great. i said it before that i believe that if he loses a little weight, it could do wonders for his offensive game. make him a touch faster, a little more bounce in his step, more verticality and speed on his drives to the rim.

by no means am i saying he's a big fat mess. i was pleasantly surprised with his ability to run what was essentially the second unit offense the other day to a great win over charlotte, who had more of its starters playing than us. but that doesnt mean i cant be critical of some aspects of his game either.

Marcus is a TANK. I think his build now will help his offensive game, Smart had a post game in college and he often trys to post now.

The day his defense looks not together is the day I would worry about Smarts weight. His game is coming along nicely IMO. I think his doubters often forget that basketball is played on both ends of the court.

Tp Ryso, well said. The day his defense looks suspect come talk to me. Until then his size and strength is an advantage against Milsap 245 pounds and Lebron 260 pounds.

I tend to agree with you on this. He definitely looks bulkier, but if that helps him in the post/against bigger players AND doesn't negatively impact him on defense, then there's nothing to worry about.
Isaiah, you were lightning in a bottle.

Is this really a thing some people are worrying about? I missed this past game, but I saw the first two preseason games. I honestly have not noticed any significant difference in his size/weight this preseason.

Let's not forget that at age 21/22 is when most young men fill out their frame and gain mass. From age 19-21 I fought mma in the 170 lb. class, but right around the age of 21 I started filling out, especially in the upperback/chest/shoulder areas, and had to move up to the 185 class. I would imagine if anything he just naturally filled out with age. If his weight was a concern of the team, I'm fairly certain we'd know about it.

Usually in that22-25 year ranges guys discover WHY their fathers looked like they do.  most people have to make adjustments in lifestyle to maintain their best fitness levels.

He may find that just his job alone is not enough to deal with his food intake he is accustomed to .  Which as most most 17-21 year olds go ,  is anything they want and sleep all day.

I have confidence his team mates , trainers , family , friends ....will point this out and he will make the health routine adjustments .

I don't think given his crazy energy level , he is in any danger of th Sully syndrome .

i noticed when he came back from his injury in late dec he looked a little puffy-he quickly lost that just playing into game shape-
i had fun trying to visualize certain players when they got older-
i think calling marcus fat is more than a bit excessive

He does look a little pudgy. But, i dont know what his training regime has been, or if hes been dealing with nagging injuries. We'll see.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I'm not going to get too worried yet, but those claiming Marcus is 'filling out' with age or that he is built like Lagarrette Blount aren't really thinking this thing through. Some dudes hit the weight room all summer and come to camp in awesome shape - this isn't what happened with Marcus. When you get a little older, you have to work that much harder at staying in shape. I doubt Brad and Danny told him to eat all you want, work on your shot, but don't worry about conditioning.

Marcus is an incredibly hard worker and his 'bulk' shouldn't hurt him too much on the court because of his game, but it is a little confusing that he didn't come to camp in the best shape of his life.
