When do you think Jaylen will get his first starting nod?

I know nothing is expected of Jaylen in year 1.  He's a raw prospect with a lack of offensive ability.  He's believed to be someone who might be able to make defensive contributions immediately, but in Summer League he looked like he'd need time to adjust.   Most expect him to be utilized off the bench next year as a defensive role player.  Long-term, the hope is that the kid will make major developments and flourish in a winning system surrounded by quality talent with an excellent coaching staff educating him.

Hopefully, he surpases expectations and develops quicker than anticipated.

On one hand:  Nothing is expected of him in year 1.  He's widely expected to be used off the bench if he shows enough defensive progress.

On the other hand:  Brad Stevens is notorious for his constant tinkering of lineups.  Our hypothetical Smart, Bradley, Brown, Crowder and Horford lineup is being called our defensive "death lineup"... maybe if it's effective, we'll see Brown get a start sooner than expected.  Also, injuries could come into play forcing Brown into a starting role, though it's not clear yet if Brown or Gerald Green will be higher in the depth chart.  Despite the fact this team projects as a 55+ win contender, you gotta figure there will be some pressure to feed Jaylen developmental minutes.  We want to avoid a Darko Millicic situation

Some notes:   RJ Hunter didn't start a single game last year.  James Young hasn't yet started a game.  Avery Bradley spent the majority of his first season in D-League (averaged 5 minutes in 31 games) and didn't get a start until his second season.  Terry Rozier got similar treatment last year - spending almost all of his season in D-League, averaging 8 minutes in 39 games and not yet getting a starting nod.

Marcus Smart got 38 starts as a rookie during a surprising 2014-15 season in which Boston seemingly set themselves up to tank (trading away their two best players for future assets) and inexplicably made the playoffs.

Will Jaylen start at all this year?  Next year?  Early this season?  Mid season?  TP's to whoever comes close to guessing Jaylen's first start.

No, Jaylen will likely not start at all next year, but that's just because we are already so good. Jaylen has heart and is a very smart guy so he should push his way into the rotation, but I don't expect him to be in Rookie of the Year contention or even make the Rising Stars game.

This will not make him a failure. On any other top 8 team he would get as many minutes as he desired, but our team is looking to make the ECF. Philly, LAL, PHO, Minny, Den can't say the same thing.

Jaylen has some growing to do and I expect him to get at least a few starts early next season.

I think I agree with you.  We have talent already.  This could be a redshirt year for Jaylen. But the more I think about it, the more I think he might sneak into a starting lineup at some point.   Brad is always tinkering and I think if Jaylen is showing enough progress he might give it a test run.   That possibility magnifies if Crowder goes down for a few games with some kind of injury.

He will get some spot starts when some
Inevitable injuries happen. I would imagine we had 8 or 9 guys start a game last year. Without looking it up guessing
Aj
Bradley
It
JJ
Crowder
Sullinger
Turner
KO

Anyone else?

if Jaylen is starting this season is going to disappoint a lot of people on this board.

We have the least depth at the sf position.  So if Jae gets injured we can turn to, JJ who could give you minutes there but can't stay with faster sf on perimeter, Marcus who could give you undersized minutes, Hunter emergency minutes but not really strong enough or Brown.
I.e. If crowder is injured brown will get some starts unless he is stinking it up

Is that a suggestion that Jaylen starting means the team has given up and entered tank mode?

I still think he might sneak into a starting lineup here or there if he proves to be strong defensively.  Marcus SMart is coming off a historically bad shooting season and it didn't stop him from getting some starts.  Jaylen's progression defensively will be key.

He will get his first start after December. We will have a rough stretch to start the new year, so we decide to go small. Jae will slot to the 4, and jaylen will start at 3. It wont last long though. It won't help out so we just go back to the original starting lineup we will have established.

I don't know what I just wrote lol.

Edit: wow, just lol at my 3000th post haha

I could very well see the Hawks... starting Taurean Prince at the 3, who is already better than Crowder, imo.

you vs. the guy she tells you not to worry about

I'd say sometime in 2018.

You and Pho both said 2018...

Do you guys think it will be a permanent starting role or just his first of an occasional spot start here and there in the year 2018?

Is your guess that by 2018 Jaylen will have surpassed Crowder and pushed him to the bench?

Well Brad Stevens has been here for 3 years, and this is a quick breakdown of the players who haves started.

2014: 12 of 19 players started.  All 9 players who averaged 20+mpg started, 11 of the 13 players who averaged 15+ mpg started, 9 of 10 players who played 40 or more games started.  Only Green and Rondo started every game they played.

2015: 12 of 22 players started. 11 of the 13 players who averaged 20+mpg started (there were 2 players who avg 15-20mpg, neither started).  8 of the 9 players who played more than 40 games started.  Only Bradley, Green, and Rondo started every game they played.

2016: 10 of 16 players started. 8 of 8 who played 20+mpg started, 9 of the 10 players who averaged 15+ mpg started, same for those who played 40+ games (Jerebko being the lone regular to never start).   Only Crowder started every game he played.

Obviously the C's had a few trades and injuries each year, but I'd also be surprised if there weren't any trades or injuries this year.  If you're a regular rotation player with Stevens, it looks like you'll get your chance to start multiple games, and I think that trend will continue this year and Brown will get to start a handful of games.

Worst case, hopefully the C's have the their playoff seed firmly locked up this year at the end of the season, and he'll get to start the last game of the season on 4/12 when Stevens rolls out the Celticsblog dream lineup of Rozier, Jackson, Hunter, Brown, Mickey.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

I think there's a 1/4 chance that Jaylen will get a start next year. Most likely it would be due to a Crowder injury. It's conceivable that we'll see him start alongside Crowder at some point in his career, but unlikely his rookie year when we have better options if we want to go small (Smart or Jerebko).
