No trade for Hayward at the deadline unless we think we'll be contending which I doubt. It's best to wait until the summer. I like him but he ain't worth max money unless no one else is available.
Here is a list of the best FAs of the 2017 summer:
Curry (UFA)
KD (player option)
Griffin (player option)
Giannis (RFA)
Chris Paul (player option)
Gobert (RFA)
Hayward (RFA)
Lowry (player option)
Millsap (player option)
Schroeder (RFA)
Wade (player option)
and then Steven Adams, Jrue Holiday, Noel, Ibaka, Gallinari, Teague, Derrick Rose, Oladipo...
Given that Curry, KD, Gobert and Giannis prolly go nowhere, Hayward is easily among the top-5 FAs next summer.
I would add Paul and Schroder to the going nowhere list. Paul will like getting the 5-year deal through Bird rights, and the Hawks didn't trade Teague just to let Schroder walk.
Thanks.
Which means that together that after Griffin, Hayward will prolly be the most sought after FA together with Millsap and Lowry.
In a league of 30 teams, where each has space for two maxs, giving one to Hayward is hardly a bad idea IMO.
edit: strikethrough typo
Personally, I feel that tying up approximately $54M a year in Horford and Gordon is a nice way to guarantee you will never be a contender, and you will be stuck in "Atlanta Hawks" territory for the nest 4-5 years.
A top three of Thomas/Hayward/Horford is really not significantly better then Teague/Millsap/Horford. If we want to be a serious contender (someone with a real shot at a title, not just somebody who tkes a top 3 seed because nobody else is good) then we're going to have to do better then that.
I'm not even entirely confident Hayward is a significant upgrade over Crowder to be honest - I think the gain would be minimal.
All of us would prefer a player in the top 20 if not top 10 to come. But consider that:
Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, Curry and KD are not leaving GSW
LBJ, Kyrie and Love are not leaving Cleveland
Melo is not leaving NYK
LMA and Leonard are not leaving SAS
Paul and Jordan are not leaving LAC
John Wall is under contract until 2018-19
Paul George is under contract until 2018-19
Harden is under contract until 2019-20 (last year player option)
Similarly, the best young stars are not going anywhere (Giannis, Gobert, KAT, Wiggins Drummond, AD).
So, we are basically left with Griffin, Westbrook, Cousins and Butler. Personally, I think only Griffin (if his quads are OK) and Cousins are significantly better for the C's than Hayward but let's assume they all are. What if we try to trade for them all and fail? We prolly made a similar effort this summer (and failed).
Getting Hayward will very likely take you all the way to the ECF. I see the danger of not getting much more beyond that (=Atlanta) but you will still have plenty of young talent (Smart, Brown et al) and picks which will allow us to improve year by year.
I also do not agree with the comparison of Hayward with Crowder. Hayward is a good ball handler and playmaker. I agree more with the comparison SL made earlier: imagine a taller ET, who makes less turnovers and can make 3s: a very good fit for a Stevens team. (ppl who like to see the glass half full also believe Hayward will improve his D one day.)
Again, I totally agree he is no Cousins or KD but cap space has value only if you can use it. (there is a nice yet macabre story by Marco Polo on the Caliph Al-Musta'sim of Baghdad as to the futility of money you cannot spend)
PS we could add Love to the player's on the trade table but i/ I am not so sure Cleveland wants to trade him and ii/ evenif they did they would ask for a king's ransom (basically for players good enough that will allow them to continue being contenders. I doubt they care much for our picks/young talents).
