Assuming he would leave and wanted to play for coach Stevens, what's the max he could receive from us, and is there any hope he would take any less.

And if he got, say 4 years and around 90 million, what kind of problems does that make, about resigning, Thomas and Smart. Or can we go over the cap becuase we are signing our own guys.

I think it's a bajillion million... ;D ;D ;D

Don't know...that sounds like a call to salty!

But talent wise I think he would be great here...another crunch time scorer to pair with Thomas.

Hayward seems like the sort of guy who will end up as the final piece added to this team. Not a superstar, but pretty good. Enough to be a threat to maybe make the Finals of all goes right.
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

If there's something strange in your salary cap
Who you gonna call? (Saltlover)
If there's something weird
And it don't look good
Who you gonna call? (Saltlover)

I ain't afraid of no cap (chorus x2)

If you're seeing FAs going to other teams
Who you gonna call? (Saltlover)
An all-star prospect
Becoming a FA
Who you gonna call? (Saltlover)

(chorus)

If you have no wings
Pick up the phone
And call Saltlover

I ain't afraid of no cap
I hear it likes the C's
I ain't afraid of no cap
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

If you've had a dose of a freaky internet rumour
You better call, Saltlover

About $28,821,726 if cap projection remains 1st year. Not my calculation.

Not that I'm aware of.

So if that source is true, then the max contract total we can offer would be:

$123,304,852 in a 4-year contract with 4.5% raises.

In other words, WAY  too much for a 2nd or 3rd banana type player. Give that to your superstar.

LOL!!! That made my day.  Bud C already answered it for me, but I'll tack on that it will not be difficult to make that that.  Assuming no moves, I project us to be about $5 million short of that amount, but I'm including Olynyk's cap hold in that, which can be instantly shed if Hayward is on board.  I would more expect that Bradley is traded to make room, since his minutes could take the greatest hit with Hayward on the team.

Of course, quite a bit depends on any new CBA structure.  Will the cap grow or shrink? Will max salaries change? Will Bird rights be given an additional advantage?  Will draft slot values rise significantly? Will there be slot values for second round picks?  We have a lot waiting in the wings.

However, I think Hayward is our likely star that we trade for mid season.  Utah knows he's a risk to leave for Boston, and they know we can easily create max space.  If that team doesn't take the big leap forward they've been waiting for every season, they will very much listen to offers.  Several franchise players left their first and only team this summer.  The risk for a small-market team like Utah of losing him for nothing is very real.

Anyway, thanks for that song, and post 6000!

The problem is there's a real opportunity cost here, that if not taken advantage off we'll be left with nothing.

Some of our core players will be hitting the free-agent market soon, if we want to keep on our current trajectory, it'll mean we'll be left without cap space regardless.

So it's time to spend. I've never been a proponent of using the cap unwisely, but I figure the risk of doing nothing vs. spending on a legit player (overpay as it may be), will probably be worse for us.

Not only that, you have to take advantage of the core you have together and their prime years.

Yep, I definitely agree with that. IT and Crowder are at their peak and we won't have them forever. If we can't add a superstar, then let's add a really good young player like Hayward and see what happens, see what this team's ceiling is.

Otherwise, once the contracts expire we will back to point 0.

The only alternative I can think of is to trade IT and Crowder for assets but then again how many picks do we really need?

(I did not mention Bradley because I have a feeling he might be gone once his contract expires if not earlier.)

16   J Young                  -
17   B Bentil                  -
18   J Holland                  -
   G Yabusele       1,628,600    = cap hold
Ante Zizic          1,192,200    = cap hold
1st rd pick       5,091,500    = cap hold for 1st pick overall
cap hold          550,000    est   cap hold for 13th slot
   cap hold
   cap hold
   Total          78,533,221

              102,000,000    salary cap est???

23,466,779    cap space available  vs. 28.8 needed

For those who want to see the numbers, I believe that this is the 5 million gap Saltlover is talking about.  This assumes Bentil, Holland and Young are released Oct 2016 and JM, DJ, JJ, AJ, TZ, and GG are all rescinded by 6/30/2017.

Personally I would not want to give up much (certainly not Avery straight up) in a trade for Gordon.  I would rather wait and try to sign next summer.
