Thomas is a good passer, but his main role is to score obviously. ET was good, but may be gone.

Who can really pass after that. Smart has disappointing. Rozier is a scoring guard. Bradley has never been good there. Crowder? No. Kelly's ok when he's assertive.

If we lose Turner we are really going to need help distributing the rock. Looking at it we need to keep Turner. And if we do we may need to draft VC Valentine at 16. And I was hoping to land a talented big guy there.

Smart hasn't really been given the opportunity to display his passing, but when given the chance, he's shown that he has excellent court vision and passing abilities. Given a bigger ball-handling role, he'd shine in his passing abilities, imo. He's no Rondo, but he's much better than many on here give him credit for.
Recovering Joe Skeptic, but inching towards a relapse.

I respectfully disagree. While I acknowledge his court vision is solid. It's his lack of quickness and ball handling that prevents him from being a reliable floor general.

I agree. Coming into the league people pegged Smart as a mediocre passer but I think he's proven that false. He has very good court vision and showed real improvement driving to the hoop last year.

I loved ET by the end of his time here, but resigning him is really contingent on what we do in the offseason. If we make moves that make us better right now it might be worth resigning him. But if we don't do anything major, make the draft picks and kind of get a little younger, I think we have to give the younger guys a chance to develop into consistent playmakers.

Rozier is a guy who should get more run. He proved he belonged last year, is a good defender, and can both handle the ball and score. I think it would be a waste to have him rot in the d-league for another year. He's ready for a role now. Plus, I think it would be wise to use #16 on Valentine, because he can give us some of the versatility Turner did with a better jump shot, and he's ready to contribute now

Smart is a good passer. But with Turner handling the ball, smart never got a chance to show his PG skills. That's why it might be time to let go of Evan. Let Marcus take the reigns
I could very well see the Hawks... starting Taurean Prince at the 3, who is already better than Crowder, imo.

you vs. the guy she tells you not to worry about

Isn't this a thread about passing? Smart's passing is the best part of his offensive game, and it's the reason I think he needs to play PG in order to maximize his value. His lack of burst keeps him from being a really good playmaker, but you don't necessarily need elite playmaking from your PG if you have an offense that generates looks off-ball and some 1-on-1 offensive firepower at the 2 or the 3.

I think the team's passing is excellent. We move the ball as well as anyone in the league.

I think what we need is more related to a particular type of passing skill, which is the ability to get into the lane, either with a pick and roll or with a one on one move, then be able to take it into the teeth of the defense and make plays. We only have two guys, IT and ET, who do that consistently.

For instance, Bradley has become quite good at the pick and pop, and actually passes quite well off picks when he doesn't shoot the jumper. What he can't do consistently is turn the corner, get into the lane, make one more move to freeze the rotating big, and then make a split second decision to pass or score. Smart has not proven to be great at that either. When he has a good angle and is well balanced, he makes the play, but all too often, his balance isn't there or he fails to set up a good angle that gives him the option of a clean shot or pass.

Guys that can do this in the NBA are a rare breed.

Passing the ball is more than a willingness to "get rid" of the rock. Passing the ball well, is about putting the ball in a the hands of the receiving player in a good position, where he can efficiently function from your pass.

If you have an open shooter in the corner, and you deliver the pass at the ankles, or he has to leap for your pass, you're reducing the odds of him getting a good shot, and or hindering his next pass to an open man in the paint.

The C's are loaded with these type of passers. Crowder has some positive points to his game, passing isn't one of them. Same for Bradley. Don't forget, both these players receive heavy minutes on the floor. Smart is not a great passer, but he is willing, and mostly accurate. Same could be said of Turner, and Sully.

Rondo, was a great passer because he put the ball at your upper chest almost all the time. Not to mention he had eyes all around his head.

The C's need to tighten up the accuracy of it's passing in general. A good passing team, can reduce the need for a super star point guard.

I am more worried about their 3 point shooting. If players could have hit open looks at a better than average rate, this team would have racked up a ton more assists and the talk about needing a passer wouldnt exist.

Smart is a below average passer for PG.  About average for a SG.

So no, I am not calling Smart an excellent passer by any stretch.

He's fine, but hasn't shown he can do enough with the ball to be the lead guard. It's not all about passing.

Well why was Turner handling the ball? Perhaps because Marcus isn't great at this? Yet?

Kris Dunn is best player available at #3 and the best passing guard in the draft. It's pretty easy who the Celtics should select.  The Celtics are not at the stage where you say we draft by need.  You take the best player available bottom line and that's Dunn.

When I rank the C's biggest needs, passing is not one of them. They desperately need someone who can score and create their own shot and a quality big waaayy more than a passer.
