Is he a heavy hitter or is he kinda a guy that gets on base? I don't think he's a strike out kinda guy.

Let's take a look

2003
13 M Banks....ground out to short
27 Perk....double
58 Brandon Hunter...considering he picked 58th....fouled off a lot before striking out

2004
15 Al Jefferson....triple..although Josh Smith was on the board
25 Tony Allen...double
24 Delonte...RBI single  (Kevin Martin was available)
41 Justin Reed....ground out....Trevor Ariza was there

2005
18 Gerald Green....went swinging for the fences. Struck out (but managed to trade him. Danny Granger was picked one pick earlier. ....players missed....Nate Robinson, Jarret Jack, Linas Kleiza, David Lee, Ersan Ilyasova, Louis Williams, Monta Ellis)
50 Ryan Gomes...single...Andray Blatche was picked one pick earlier
53 Orien Greene ....strike out..Amir Johnson, Marin Gortat were drafted after.

So this year was just horrid. Horrid.

2006
21 Rondo....3 RBI home run (Kyle Lowry and Paul Milsap were available).
49 Powe...double

Awesome draft. His best ever.

2007
Jeff Green. ...traded. Doesn't count
32 Gabe Pruitt...double play
35 Big Baby...double

players picked after Big Baby....Marc Gasol. Ramon Sessions. Josh McRoberts

2008
30 Jr Giddens
60 Semih Erden

Danny was gonna draft DeAndre Jordan....but then he got high. Na na na na. He was gonna take DeAndre Jordan....but then he got hiiigggh

Let's not talk about 2008....ever.

2009
58 Lester Hudson at 58.  Basically doesn't count

2010
19 Avery Bradley....double....Eric Bledsoe picked one spot earlier.
52 Luke Harongody. Player got called up from triple A for one game and fouled out pop out

2011
27 JuJuan Johnson....triple play ground out...players available....Norris Cole, Corey Joseph, Jimmy Butler, Bojan Bogdanovic, Kyle Singler, Shelvin Mack, Chandler Parsons, Jon Leur, Lavoy Allen
55 Etwaun Moore....ground out.....available....Isaiah Thomas

Another horrid horrid horrid year

2012
21 Sully....single
22 Fab Melo.........ground out triple play, then got in fight with umpire and was suspended
available...Tony Wroten, Ezeli, Jae Crowder, Draymond Green, Kris Middleton, Kyle O'Quinn

51 Kris Joseph...strike out...Robert Sacre was there

Another horridly unspeakable draft

2013
13 KO...single...coulda had Giannis, Dennis Schroeder, Dieng, Mason Plumlee, Rudy Gobert,

Another draft we are just better off not talking about

2014
6 Smart...single
17 James Young...double play...coulda had Gary Harris, Clint Cappella, Rodney Hood, Jordan Clarkson,

2015
16 Rozier...single...picked over Justin Anderson, Bobby Portis, RHJ
28 RJ Hunter....maybe a single, maybe a ground out
33 Jordan Mickey...maybe a single
45 Marcus Thornton...strike out....next pick was Normal Powell

The 20th overall picks since 2003 are

Dahntay Jones
Jammer Nelson
Julius Hodge
Renaldo Balkman
Jason Smith
Alexis Ajinca
Eric Maynor
James Anderson
Donatas Motiejunas
Evan Fournier
Tony Snell
Bruno Cabacalo
Delon Wright

There's only one all star in there and he was only an all star once.

So on average at these spots you can expect maybe to get a hit or a ground out at the 20 spot and that's about what he has averaged out to.

At the 48 spot you can expect to strike out, but in 13 years you might hit big once.

So he has essentially averaged out.

And the average isn't great.

But he's not bad.

So he's an average drafter and a great trader.

And that's why I'd rather see him pull off a trade

To answer the OP's question Danny's a drafter who has done well despite limited resources.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

So based on your information that you gave these would be Danny's Stats:

At Bats: 31

Batting Average: .451
Slugging: .806
RBI: 4
HR:1
Strike Out: 4

So actually a pretty good drafter, just with a few bad outings (although RBI's could be better).

And based on what has been taken (historically) at the 20th and 48th spot, there really is not that much to complain about with Danny's draft choices. He just hasn't gotten REALLY lucky yet.

I'd say he's done ok, but he hasn't exactly set the world on fire or anything

Looking at the first round it's about a 50% chance of drafting a respectable player or better (and of course near the top of the draft maybe very very respectable) but in many cases the player becomes respectable on another team later on

Under 50 percent.

Have to be better to successfully build a franchise.

Extremely mediocre record - the baseball average analogy flatly does not work here. This is not the record of a GM who can build a champion through the draft.

Trade the 3rd pick.

Any time your drafting out of the top 10 it's a crap shoot. I mean IT was drafted dead last, everyone but SAC on the last pick miss out on that.

But things to consider is how these guys play and work out for them the last time they see them. Some guys may have killed it like Rozier did that made them think they should take a chance. But it ends up they were just having a REALLY good day. Some times kids just work out better, but once they hit the NBA court, they regress.

Look at Young. He kills it on Maine, but can't come even close to doing that on an NBA court.

Also a lot was during the Doc years. You know Doc had some input. I'm hoping Stevens has some this time around.

One thing though, DA knows talent. He has missed on some guys, but he also has brought them in once they have played in the league for a couple years, like IT and Crowder, both have been better than they were playing for their former teams, and better than we though could be.

Great at finding guys who can play in the NBA late in the draft.   Midling at 1st round talent.

I understand this is a topic and all are fair game here at the forum. But, isn't this similar to stating that Carl Yaztremski was a "mediocre bunter" or, to get back to basketball, that Red Auerbach's "clothes smelled like cigars" or Tommy Heinsohn is a "homer"? If you take "one thing" about a guy you probably have to fire him right?

Ainge traded a good player and a bag of balls and got us 178 wins to 68 losses in three seasons. It was his team except for Paul.

Dave Cowens played dirty underneath. I don't know why Red dafted him. He was a second team all American. He didn't bring his FSU team to the national title. He was short for centers of the day. Ooops, two NBA titles...sorry I almost forgot.

Yes, Ainge has weaknesses that are magnified by horrible draft positions.

Over the years, Belichick has drafted about 57 defensive backs and three of them are pretty good. He's drafted a bus load of quarterbacks...one is pretty good. Seriously, Bill as a "percentage" drafter of QB's and DB's? Not much, how does he still have his job?

KC Jones couldn't score.
Gronk parties too much.
Teddy Williams was mean to reporters.
Brady wears girlie shoes...sometimes.
Bobby Orr's knees were bad.
Papi's 30 pounds overweight and Ainge is a mediocre drafter.
