I was just thinking today the 3rd pick is the single most critically difficult place for a GM to be in this draft.

The reason is that somewhere between 3 and 9 is a player that will be very good and make people go "Wow!"  A Giannis or Porzingis type. A K Love. A Lillard. Probably not a Steph Curry but it's possible. Someone that will outplay his draft position in a big way. Also in that range will be at least one bust. Also in that range will be ok guys that just plain won't move the needle.

It is absolutely 100% Ainge's job to find that guy and to avoid the bust or the non difference maker. We can't be caught with another KO while Giannis is out there. It can't happen.

My prediction is Ainge knows that and does his best to pull off the Ray Allen type trade. No WAY we can get stuck with a Jeff Green. No WAY.

Luck would be over if we got 5 or 6... Top 3 (even in a hyped 2 person draft) isn't bad at all. Murray is looking awesome in workouts. Maybe he'll just straight beast it into June and people realize there's talent outside of the top 2

Or we trade it as the OP suggested which would be fine as well

Frankly, this takes a little pressure off Danny.  Trading 1 or 2 would have come with the worry that one of those guys will become a franchise player.  Less value obviously at 3 but also less second-guessing if the pick is traded.  There was significant movement last year in between lottery and the draft regarding player value.  There may be teams that are really high on (or become enamored with) a player other than Simmons/Ingram. We draft another guard I'm going to have a hard time watching them. We have the worse front court in the NBA. Have to trade this pick I don't want some scranny eurotrash either.

If we draft another guard we are presumably looking at something like

Murray/Hield
Smart
Rozier


That's absurd.

At that point you have to at least try to trade Rozier for one of the decent bigs last year. Ainge fudged up the Portis thing and you can't get him for Rozier now and the Bulls probably wouldn't want him anyway so maybe you could get Jarell Martin (seeing how Mike Conley goes to free agency), or maybe Montrezl Harrell (the Rockets have enough bigs), or maybe Larry Nance.

Shooting was a far bigger issue in the playoffs. Murray or Hield would be a good fit here if it isn't traded

It had Paul Pierce which put it in a win now or I'm gone mode.  This team has much greater flexibility to win now and build for the future. Don't forget we have a very good pick next year and possibly the year after if Nets continue to suck.

If we keep getting the Marcus Smarts of the draft we are going to be a terrible terrible team and miss our window. We can't take the next step with Marcus Smarts.

Trade 3rd and etc for Cousins. Then we can sign a decent shooter and defender....like Allen Crabbe. Or we could sign Evan Fournier on a lower offer bc he was so up and down. Both are longer and younger than AB, they can also defend 1-3. Just thinking out loud.

It would be really nice if we hit a home-run with a legit sg, or if one of the young guys (James Young) steps up.

Bender and Brown are the two guys I really like this draft.  I don't see Hield replicating Curry's success.  He is strictly a shooting guard.  He doesn't have the other aspects to his game that Curry does.  He also isn't as athletic or as tall as Ray.  I think people were overrating Simmons and Ingram for other reasons.

Bender and Brown have the most upside this draft.

I doubt Ainge would make that deal for Portis. Bulls are the ones that really wanted Rozier and he finished off the season really well. Portis played out of necessity, and while he looked good, I am not sure he is a sure-fire starting PF/C.
