Quote
The Most Valuable Player. The player with the most skill, who contributes the most to their team. Used mainly in sports and video games
.

I see someone who is a MVP of a team,  where if they missed a long stretch of games the team would suffer.

If GSW lost Curry and we have seen this happen right before our eyes, the GSW still keep on trucking .   (maybe they don't win yesterday, up for debate)

But if the Cavs lost Lebron, well we have seen what happens also. Team is just mediocre.  Atl prob takes the Cavs to 7 or wins

Maybe there should be two diff type of awards. MVP where without you the team is in shambles and another for the best offensive player in the league

Where is that definition coming from?

I just googled it word for word, and the first thing that came up was Urban Dictionary, probably not a good starting point for any discussion.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

As the definition above, I have always known MVP for their team. Not the league.

In the NBA does MVP mean to the league or their team?

The thing is, the award hasn't been interpreted by its strict definition historically. Hell, you could make the argument that IT is the MVP by its strict definition, because where in the world would the C's offense be without IT? He's the *most valuable player* to his respective team.

The MVP award is meant for the best player in the league, usually with the condition of him also being on a top-3 to top-5 team. Curry has clearly been the best player in the league this year, as evidenced by his performance last night.

This what the struggle always is with this award.  IMO, Lebron James is still the best player in the league, Lebron James is the most critical player to his teams success of any player in the league, and yet I have no problem with Stephen Curry winning the MVP this year.

So to recap, I think the best player is Lebron James, I think the player that is the most valuable to his team is Lebron James, and yet if I had a vote I would have voted Stephen Curry the MVP this season.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

I'm glad it was unanimous.

I don't think the Hawks beat Irving, Love and the others.

We will obviously never know but those two guys are much better than the Hawks two best players.

Curry is the best story, and that is what the award is. Records are exciting. New is exciting. Steph Curry is playing a different sport and it's jaw-droppingly amazing.

If you try to come up with a convention definition like "who is the all-around best player," or "who would get paid the most money in a free agent auction," or "who adds the most wins to their team," or "who would get picked first in a grand one-season re-draft," though, all roads lead back to Lebron James.

Put him on any team in the NBA and it will contend for the championship. Even the 76ers. I mean it. This can't be said of Steph Curry.

There is no debate.

The idea that Curry is only better because of context is hogwash.

Curry is the most dominant player in the league right now.  He breaks the game.

Curry is the MVP by a landslide. No question.

Curry:

Led the league in scoring
Led the league in steals
Shot 50/45/90
Was 3rd in rebounds-per-game for guards
Was the #1 option on the winningest regular-season team ever
Just showed why he's a difference-maker last night

I think he deserved the MVP, and that's without looking at any advanced stats.

There are two conventional approaches to MVP that I do think go to Curry-- one is that the MVP is the best player on the best team. I definitely think that Curry is that. The other is that the MVP is the player who gave the best overall regular season performance. I haven't looked at all of the angles I'd like to but I do think that goes to Curry as well.

I agree. Whether he is above Lebron or not, there is still room to question it. If Curry wins another ring he removes more questions. Wins a third then yeah we should stop questioning then.
