Theoretically yes we could. We could trade guaranteed contracts for Cousins and waive Sully, JJ, Amir, Zeller and Turner to sign Durant and Horford.

Of course Sacramento wouldn't want the guaranteed contracts and Durant would be silly to sign a 5 year deal this summer so..

Since Sully is an RFA, can't we re-sign him even if we go over the salary cap? Not sure what happens with Amir either.

Sully has a cap hold of about $5.5 million.  We cannot get Durant and Horford and keep his cap hold on the books, even after waiving Amir and JJ, without also moving someone else.

No worries there - if we somehow landed a front court of Cousins and Horford, then retaining Sully would no longer be a priority.

In this theoretical team, I think it would be really important to keep two of Crowder/Smart/AB as well as IT (obviously). While I would love a super-team, I don't want to lose our defensive intensity, which I think we would miss more than we know.

Fun to dream, no doubt .... but even in reality the idea of maxing Horford doesnt thrill me. Wrong side of 30, injury history to a degree, upside has been fully tapped already.

If he is a key to Durant, sure. But on his own, I'm a little weary.

Is it mathematically possible for us to do this (hypothetical long shot I know), I am not too good at working out cap room and bird rights and the ability to exceed the cap. If we were to trade for Cousins, would we be left with a good enough line up to entice either or both KD and AH?

Hypothetically if we were to win the draft and offer up the number 1 pick, C's pick, along with Olynyk, Smart or Rozier and a future 1st would that suffice? Without AJ, Turner, Zeller, JJ, Sully, I am assuming we would be under the cap to sign Boogie?

Obviously Durant and Horford will want max contracts but would we exceed the soft cap with current contracts and Cousins?

I know it's a pipe dream but can you imagine?!!

Cousins
Horford
Durant
Bradley
Thomas

6th: Crowder, 7th Rozier/Smart, 8th Mickey, 9th Hunter ect.
I can imagine world peace too. This would come right before as a teaser.

Spike... World Peace.... I think Metta is washed up.   I'd take Ron Artest before him... jk...

I'm still unsure about the details on salary cap and re-signing rookies, but IMO this much is clear:

if you can get Durant get one of DMC/Horford and keep the rest of the money to ensure your supporting cast makes you a real contender. No reason to go after two elite bigs.

As a free agent, restricted or not, a player counts against the salary cap for an amount referred to as a "cap hold" that is based on how much he made the previous season until he is signed by the Celtics, signed by another team, or renounced.  The cap hold reduces the amount of cap space available to sign a free agent, but once you sign that free agent, the Celtics can go above the cap to re-sign Sullinger.
