Pierce...for sure.

Garnett...he's getting his number retired in Minnesota. His heart is in his home town.

Allen... he's traveled around a bit. Should he be getting his number retired in Milwaukee? I don't  agree with this-lack-of-effort in Boston being mentioned in response to this post. He had bad ankles from day one. How he managed to even stay on his feet without missing a lot of playing time is quite remarkable.

Rondo...I would say he gets his number retired too. If Max's number is retired, then he should get his due too. He was the engine that made the team go during the Celtics run.

Pierce definitely.

KG and Rondo will probably both get it too.

Personally, I think this whole number retiring thing has gotten out of hand. Sorry, but there should be a much higher level for a number to be retired. As much as I love KG, 4 years and 1 championship does not deserve a number to be retired.
The only on this list would be Pierce. Not only has he put in his years, but is 2nd or 3rd all time leading scorer in Celtics history. I can get on board with that. The other 3, not so much.

Pierce, and that's it.

As much as I liked KG, he wasn't here long enough, and the other two are out of the question.

One common thought with new players is that they say it is hard to find a good number as a Boston Celtic. I looked over the recent rosters since the Big 3 era, and no player has adopted the numbers 34, 5, 9, and 20. Makes me wonder if they already have those numbers on the reserve list until the time is right to retire the numbers.

TP for the observation.

I'll bet a bunch of TPs that #20 is given out first of those numbers....and hopefully to KD, although I could see Buddy Hield or Jamal Murray or even Denzel Valentine wearing it.

I'd go with just Pierce too.  Ray and Rondo left too unceremoniously.  If KG had even finished out his career with the Nets, I'd be more open to retiring his number.  But with his return to the T-Wolves and his plans to stay involved with them when he retires, he seems way too affiliated with that organization to be worthy of a retired number here.

Plus, in all cases, we're talking about players who only contributed to 1 of our 17 banners.  That is very impressive; but, I think it'd be a different matter if they had found a way to win another title or two during that run.

I think I'm the same as most. Pierce yes, KG yes but it's a closer call. Ray and Rondo no. Only way Rondo could have had his jersey retired is if he was a lifer. Ray was a core part of the championship team but was really the 3rd piece. And when it comes to retiring the jersey, the way he left matters even if it was legit on his part

  • That's turrible
Pierce- Yes. He sparked new life to the Celtics during a very dark period of time when the franchise full on sucked. Pierce made those teams in the early 00's watchable and almost took them to the Finals in 02. Then he finally got what he deserved in 07-08 with the championship run. I know he wanted to leave many times before that, but he sucked it up and kept going anyways. He's a trooper and did great things for the Celtics. #34 deserves to be put up in the rafters.

KG- That's tough. He's definitely going to get his #21 retired in Minnesota. #5 changed the overall identity of the team and became their biggest defensive presence. Great dude to have in your corner. Again, he was only here for 6 years though. If 5 goes up, I won't complain, but I'll understand if it doesn't too

Ray Ray- No. You left us for LeBron.

Rondo- Probably won't happen because of what happened the last couple seasons in Boston. It's too bad because he really was something else.

Pierce of course and KG I think for sure will.  I love Pierce but it was KG that defined the team at its core for years.  KG is a guy that is worth a spot for how much he became a Celtic and how much a fantastic player he was.

KG was a 1st All-NBA player, DPOY, and NBA champion for us in the same season.

He was also a 5-time All-Star for us and was voted to start in 4 of those games.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

I find it interesting that no current player wears any of those jersey #'s, as if they're already hanging on the rafters.

I'd say 20 and 9 are up for grabs.

Truuuuuuuuuth!

PP for sure. Ray for sure not. KG, well if it were any other team yes, but we have so many retired so I don't know. RR, no unless he comes back at some point. I guess Ray is done but either Ray or KG could get it if they came back for ever a short stint.
