The basketball universe seems to think this is a flop. Taking off my Green Goggles, I still don't see how it's a flop. Melo slammed into him. Smart attempted to draw the charge. Arguably his feet were set too.
I could very well see the Hawks... starting Taurean Prince at the 3, who is already better than Crowder, imo.

you vs. the guy she tells you not to worry about

I was also thinking the same thing when I saw everyone making a big deal about it. It's certainly embellished, as most charge attempts are, but I don't see how it's a flop. Flops are egregiously embellished acts from minor contact. There was decent contact on this call, and Smart just exaggerated it a bit to get the call. I see a big difference between the two.
Recovering Joe Skeptic, but inching towards a relapse.

That's a big dude putting his shoulder into you, so I don't know.  Think he might have sold it a bit, but not sure it was a complete "flop."  For sure being overreacted to by the masses.

Yeah, that's a bit of a flop.  Is it as bad as some?  No, because there is at least contact to the center of the body.  But there wasn't nearly enough contact to move someone as strong as Smart, much less knock him completely off his feet.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I do not think it as a flop at all.

His feet were set so of course he was going to fall when Carmelo threw his shoulder into him. I suppose it was a bit exaggerated, but absolutely an offensive foul and great awareness/timing (as usual) by Marcus. If the roles were reversed, a call certainly would have been made.

After a 2nd look, it looks like a flop to me.

Guys, come on. That was a CP3-level flop, he went down like he got shot. Marcus is a pretty strong kid, too strong to hit the floor that hard from a bump from Melo.

I watched that a number of times. That was clearly a flop. Smart might be my favorite player. It's between him and Olynyk. But a flop's a flop and Marcus Smart has a flopper reputation. He has to try to not flop and trust the incompetent refs will see he just got elbowed hard into the chest.

They flop to not only get the call, but it lessens the impact.

I don't know, he clearly sold the impact. But to call it a flop is unfair, especially because he has his feet set, and it can be argued Melo digs his shoulder/elbow.

I think a fair assessment is to say that Melo should have been called for an offensive foul for the elbow, but smart shouldn't have sold the impact.

Whether it's a flop or not it's still an offensive foul...his shoulder lowered and he's driving into the stationary player.

I agree. It was an offensive foul. The refs are incompetent. He probably missed the foul and only caught Marcus doing a theater routine.

Smart is our best player at drawing offensive fouls---cause he is a borderline flopper---but he sells it really well most times...Carmelo has spent his career, pushing off to get space on his shot--so I don't give a crud about him....he uses his elbows a LOT too.

It wouldn't look like such a flop if he didn't "overact" to that extent.  If he wasn't so dramatic he may have gotten the call.
