Moral of the story, no future draft pick is safe because of the slim chance of having Kevin Durant join their forces. Got it.
We've seen a lot of articles about how doomed Brooklyn is. They are apparently hopeless, because they don't have draft picks.
They are a bottom 3 team right now. It's wonderful for us. It's by far the highlight of this season. The potential to land an impact player from them is tremendous.
Some seem to think we will continue to land top 5 picks from them, because they are hopeless. I don't agree they are doomed. There's still moves they could make before the deadline that could make them semi decent this season. I saw the article on ESPN about Durant potentially going to Brooklyn and thought it was interesting primarily, because it ran counter to the common narrative. In a sea of people saying Brooklyn is hopeless, here's someone on ESPN suggesting that not only could Brooklyn use their cap space to make an improvement... but that you can't even rule out the possibility of them adding a superstar. It's a bold stance by Mazzeo. His reasoning is the same reasoning people expect the Lakers and Knicks to be a big player in free agency (they generally are). Brooklyn is an appealing business destination for a top-level player. Being the face of that franchise has appeal. Mazzeo includes a layer about Brooklyn's connections to Roc Nation.
The moral of the story is, I wouldn't rule out the possibility that Brooklyn will be mediocre over the next couple years. That's relevant to our picks. Ainge must be aware of this, because he reportedly offered at least one Brooklyn pick along with 5 other draft picks to try to move up from #16 to #9 this Summer. I still wouldn't be totally comfortable seeing a Brooklyn pick moved without top 3 protection, but I think it's pretty unlikely Brooklyn heads into next season without some talent upgrades. They have the money, they'll be entirely willing to spend it, and someone will take it.
