when love couldn't win as the focal point of the wolves, and was reported to be a locker room cancer, people said "he just needs better players around him." now he has lebron, irving, and a bunch of strong role-players, and that's still not enough?
what sort of team exactly does he need to succeed and be a good teammate?
at some point we need to stop apologizing for this guy and call a spade a spade.
An alternative telling is that Love singlehandedly made the Wolves a 40 win team in the West, and since he left they've gone 29-97. It might take them 200 games to win another 40. Yeah, he's not LeBron, but some pretty good players have been held back by historically bad franchises.
Cleveland turned him into a stretch 4 who watches LeBron, Kyrie, and even JR Smith dominate the ball. It's not like 15-and-11 while relegated to standing at the 3PT line is bad production.
Do I think he's a undeniable franchise guy, who will dominate in every situation? No. However, there are very legitimate reasons to believe a guy who averaged 26-13-4 (59% TS) two years ago as a 25 year-old is still really, really good at basketball, and any team should want him.
Come on now...
Kevin Love joined the Timberwolves in 2008/2009 and his last season there was 2013/14.
In that 6 year stretch the team won:
08/09: 24 games
09/10: 15 games
10/11: 17 games
11/12: 26 games
12/13: 31 games
13/14: 40 games
When they won 40 games in 2013/14 they also had:
* Kevin Martin (19.1 PPG on 43%/39%/89% shooting)
* Nikola Pekovic (17.5 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 54% FG)
* Ricky Rubio (9.5 PPG, 8.6 APG, 3.4 RPG)
Hardly 'single handedly'. Kevin Martin, Nikola Pekovic and Ricky Rubio was a much better 2nd/3rd/4th guy than what we have on our team right now, and we are on pace to win 42 games this year. Unless you are willing to admit that Isaiah Thomas is a better player and leader than Kevin Love (I won't necessarily disagree) it's pretty ludicrous to suggest that Love carried that team to 40 wins single-handedly.
Oh and you know what Minnesota's second best win record was over that 6 year stretch? It was 2012/13, when Love was injured and played only 18 games.
