I had a thought that these expectations surrounding Stauskus are at least partially due to him being taken at no 8 by the Kings, hardly the best franchise at selecting talent. If he goes 4-5 picks later, we probably aren't sitting here thinking how logical it is for the Sixers to keep force-feeding him minutes despite his lackluster production. If the Kings don't take him, what pick does he end up going? Would we still have such lofty expectations for him then?
most mock drafts had him going in the 8-12 range if i recall.
and i don't know that anyone has "lofty expectations" at this point. his ceiling definitely seems a lot lower than it was on draft night, but it's not unreasonable to think he still has a chance of being at least a good spot-up shooter.
Yes, but most mocks are based on guesses/rumors about where players might be picked, not whether they deserved to be picked there. A mock is supposed to predict what teams might do, not what they should do.
All I'm saying is that part of what we expect from young players is based on their draft position, without any consideration of whether the scouting report and pre-draft rank was accurate to begin with, or whether the draft year was shallow or deep.
I mean, is there really a huge gap in talent between Gary Harris (19) and Stauskus? Yet we have much more expectations for Stauskus because he was taken 11 spots earlier despite them being ranked 1-2 on pre-draft SG rankings.
