Because the Nets don't suck. Like I predicted they will be there for the 8th spot in the end of the year.

10-26 now

But they're only 9.5 games out of the 8 seed!

Seriously the chance of this Nets team making the playoffs is  as about as good as LeBron forcing a trade to the Cs...

Worst record only nets a 25% chance of winning the lottery. This isn't the NFL. As long as the Nets stay bottom 3, we got a shot.

I'm hoping the Nets stay there and someone pushes the Lakers out.

That someone might be the Lakers themselves. Though their record might not show it, they've been playing a lot better lately. They almost beat Sacramento on the road and almost beat OKC at home last night.

As far as the Nets go, rumor has it they're going to blow everything up sans Thad Young and Brook Lopez. At worst, that pick will be top 5.

The Nets have nothing to gain by blowing it all up. Their 1st round picks don't have any meaning for another 3 years, we own them.

They have a lot to gain by blowing it up, regardless of us owning their picks. They can get picks and prospects from other teams now for their vets while they still can, and jump start their rebuild. They can then develop the prospects and use the picks they would get for trading guys like Lopez and Young, and be in a decent position when they start getting their own picks again.

As is right now, staying the course just prolongs the inevitable and sets back their rebuild several years, if not more. The writing is on the wall, any half decent GM would just accept the situation and start with the rebuild, but then again Billy King is not a half-decent GM.

They also have nothing to lose because they are already one of the league's worst teams, but I wasn't even going by what I'd like them to do. I was going by what I heard. Charlotte's called about Bogdonovic's availability and the Nets could buy out Johnson to save money. That's all I heard.

- The problem for us is not the Nets getting better, but other teams getting worse especially after the trade deadline.

- The Lakers are playing better and might be figuring that it's best to lose the pick to the 76ers this year rather than waiting to lose it the next two (top 3 protected this year and next, unprotected 2018). If they finish 2nd worse this year and next (Sixers get marginally better with a very young squad next season with lots of new faces, but are still the NBA's worst), Lakers would be able to keep both picks in the top 3 pick only 31% of the time and would have to give the pick up in 2018. This is a weaker draft too than the last couple.

- I'd argue for the Nets blowing it up for picks, Lopez is playing at a high level and you might be able to get some real picks for him if someone gambles on his injury history being behind him. Don't see them attracting FAs next couple of years with everyone else having a lot of cap too.

So how does King's contract being up at the end of the year affect potential moves for the Nets this year? From what I'm hearing, there's almost a 0% chance of him coming back, so does that make it more or less likely that he will start the tear down or try to stay somewhat competitive?
Recovering Joe Skeptic, but inching towards a relapse.

But by trading players for picks they are making themselves worse still
as they are trading away proven players for a chance a prospect develops
this means they will still be worse in the short term
which is where we own their picks

they are best at keeping their current core and try lure good vets in free agency/ slightly overpay players to entice them to play for the nets

or trying to trade/ swindle a player that is underused and will immediately improve them

People are continuing to miss what I'm saying. I wasn't even trying to post any opinions on what the Nets should do. I'm just posting what I heard. Charlotte has called about Bogan's availability. Look it up. There's a rumor about the Nets buying out Joe Johnson. Look it up. There you go.

As far as what my opinion is, I don't care what Brooklyn is going to do. They are horrible and nothing is going to get better for another few years no matter what they do. They keep things the way they are in the hopes of landing a good free agent are pretty futile because they have shown the league that they are one pretty incompetent franchise. That and Paul Pierce and Deron Williams, two very good talents when they were at the top of their games, have personally spoken to the media about how bad Brooklyn was for them. You think vets are going to think a place like that is the place for them to stay long-term? And if your retort is, "Well Brooklyn will have money to spend this summer!", then I'll retort that with, "So will just about everyone else in the entire league."

They could also trade Young and Lopez and take the chances of getting some nice young talent back for them. That's not a perfect plan because they would then be taking the chances of the draft helping them which isn't fool-proof. However, since Lopez and Young are as good as they are going to get, and clearly that's not leading the team anywhere, it might be best to hasten the re-build as opposed to just having those guys lead them to be one step above Philadelphia-bad.

Then again, it doesn't matter what the Nets do because again, they are screwed tremendously.

I didn't see the "sans Thad Young and Brook Lopez" portion when I first read it. Thought you meant blowing everything up including them, since that'd be an actual blowing everything up. :)
