I think you are really overrating Howard here while simultaneously overestimating how close the Celtics are. Dwight Howard is 30 and already at the end or past his prime. He will be overpaid next year and only get worse. This is a deal you make if you're one move away, not a few moves away.

Not to mention, Dwight is not the greatest leader and on this young team he will be the oldest vet and have the largest salary. It's not an environment that will keep his immaturity in check.

Finally, being able to opt out it's highly likely Howard would jump to a team closer to a title. There will be plenty of teams with space to sign him so he'll have lots of options.

Oh yeah, and his FT shooting is a liability at the end of games. Pass.

assume Dwight is just in a bad situation and in the wrong system

Let's see: DH was drafted by Orlando, but he was "in a bad situation and in the wrong system".

Then he went to LA, but there he was "in a bad situation and in the wrong system".

Now he's in Houston, where he's "in a bad situation and in the wrong system".

But, no, I'm sure he'll be fine here....

Huh?  DH was reaching the NBA Finals with Orlando.  He had a great supporting cast.  In LA and Houston he has/had an inefficient ballhog who wants to lead the league in FGA, and horrible supporting casts.  Regardless, the Lakers went from a good team to the worst in the league when he left.

I pretty much agree with this.
Except his supporting cast wasn't that great (Rafer Alston and Rashard Lewis, and an injured prime jameer nelson with Gortat off the bench).

We would have killed them witwith a healthy KG but yeah, he wasn't a drama queen in Orlando and in LA,/Kobe couldn't stand
A)being the 2nd fiddle
B) having the best player on the team be a guy who was a more relaxed personality in a locker room that Kobe built/owned.

Howard would be our best player and a huge upgrade over Amir J on both ends.

I think Howard for
Amir+Lee+Celtics pick+Mavs pick+future 2nd rounders would get it done for an expiring Howard. Worth the gamble to me. Our defense would be #1 or #2 and we'd have an efficient scorer inside...a better version of David Lee onnboth ends.
We'd challenge the Raptors for 2nd best team in the East with Dwight....as long as he's healthy.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.
