Dwight Howard is my least favorite person in the NBA.

Normally that wouldn't be enough to make me not want a former MVP candidate but in this case I can honestly say that given his offensive shortcomings (he cant do what bigs in our system are asked to do), his inflated ego, his poor free throw shooting, his diminished athleticism, the fact that despite being huge he is still short for a center at 6'10, I dont want him anywhere near this team.

I'd do this trade if Danny had spoken to Howard's agent and they knew that Howard would re-sign with us as a FA. I think giving Howard something like 22.5 million x 2 years would be an okay deal...that's 25% of our cap and still leaves us room for another major FA/max plys some $15-18 million guy if needed. especially now that he's 30 and will start declining rapidly....
I also don't want Terrence Jones because I'm pretty sure he's a restricted free agent this offseason like Sully and he's going to get some big offers. Although he's a good young player.
If there weren't any assurances that Howard would re-sign, then I'd still do it but just for our own 2016 pick +Wolves pick/s+ Lee+ Jerebko.

I'd gamble on using 25% of our cap on Howard-He's still got some life left in him and while he often acts like a child, he still wants to win and is playing harder than anyone on that Houston team right now.
My god can you imagine a line up of
Smart
Bradley
Crowder
Amir
Howard

on defense?

About the first sentence of your statement- We've seen how that worked out with DeAndre Jordan this summer. Knowing Dwight, he might turn back his word and opt-out instead, going to South Beach or the rathole in Cleveland to team up with LeBron.

Interesting perspective from all.

My thought on this is, we would be rekindling a fire with Dwight. Infact, our whole team is made up of people just like Dwight. Hard working, defensive grinders, and i think we have to remember, this is a guy who couple years back was the best big in the league. He also led a team PAST Lebron, into the finals.

Bottom line, i feel, he hates playing with that selfish prick Harden.

I think he would instantly become the face of our franchise, and i could imagine Brad being able to get through to dwight and use him very effectively.

Jones in the trade is a cherry o top, and yes, i think his upside is MORE than Sully, at a similar cost, with a much better ATHLETE.

If Sully is in a contract year (which he is), and this is the BEST shape hes been in....thats a HUGE problem.

I do this trade all day and twice on Tuesdays.

Howard would be a total disaster here.  Fans would be expecting Shaq in his prime and instead get Mark Blount on too many nights.  Celticsblog would be a lot of fun though...

Howard is not a lead star and never has been.

He's old.

He has no offensive game.

He's not a winner.

I mean he might still be able to help defensively but only for weakside blocks and manning the rim otherwise he's kinda terrible at rotational/team defense.

I don't trade any first round picks for him.

He'll probably quit on the next team he's traded to.

Statistically, he is better than any of our bigs.
He is a better shooter, down low.
A better rebounder than Sully.
A better scorer than Sully.
He can block shots.

But he is most definitely an upgrade over what we have now.   Your talking about a big that score 2 more PPG, Rebounds 2 more RPG, and shoots .57% from the field and not .43%.   Add 1 more block per game as well and legit size on D.

I too, I am not crazy about getting him unless we can get him on the cheap.    I think Ainge comments about a big scorer rule him out.   I am fearful of his bad back.

Yep, I think his dimise has been exaggerated. The problem with him has more todo with business, management, locker, health...

Who says no?

Boston easily.

I do. Howard's a rental and Terrance Jones isn't very good...Three firsts? No way.

So long as Howard agrees to a contract extension, that is fine.

Otherwise, 3 firsts is too much for a player who is a high risk to leave in 6 months time.

Dwight (C) + Mickey (PF) would be a fun combination. Lots of shot-blocking and athleticism.

If Dwight opted in to the final year (so you would have 1.5 years), I would do that trade.  Boston has enough 1st round picks and very limited roster space.  I think Jones will be cheaper to re-sign than Sully and provides much of what Sully does.  Howard is a clear upgrade down low and even in his reduced capacity would still be Boston's best player (and I'm not sure it is all that close).  Acquiring Dwight is much more about the playoffs, than the regular season and he would be a huge help there (with all the days off).

So post trade Boston has a roster of

Starters
PG - Thomas
SG - Bradley
SF - Crowder
PF - Johnson
C - Howard

Bench
Smart, Jones, Olynyk, Jerekbo, Zeller, Rozier, Hunter, Mickey, Young with 1 open roster spot

Instantly the team is a lot better down low and defensively and despite Howard not being a great shooter, the trade would also improve the offense by now actually requiring someone to be guarded down low (Howard is still a guy you have to double team in the low block).  Trade also opens up some more playing time for the younger wings/guards as Turner's minutes are gone.  Next summer Boston still has the Brooklyn pick to add and still has some roster flexibility in Johnson, Jones, and Jerekbo (and Young may gone as well).

The reality is Boston doesn't need 3 more mid to late 1st round picks on the roster and any time you can add a clear upgrade at a clear position of need for picks you basically have to trade any way, you have to do it.  Again though Dwight needs to opt in to his contract.  I don't think you use that many assets on a guy that will leave in the summer, but 1.5 years I think is worth it.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner
