  • Peace it's a board. We all will never agree.
Hunter is obviously the better player right now, but Young is finally showing signs of not being totally useless and that is what has people excited. Of course he is supposed to be known for his shooting and athleticism, but what is really interesting is that he is getting minutes based on his defensive ability - which is crazy.

I think Young will continue to get some minutes because that is how players develop (he already tears it up in the D-League), but Hunter will and should get his spot back in the rotation as we are in win-now mode.

I am just happy to see Young improving to the point that he is taking JJ's minutes - he is still super young and even though it is a small step forward, it is still progress.
I think they can both Play 2 and 3 at same time.

Young is a 3 while Hunter is a 2

In a few seasons a possible lineup could look like

KO
Mickey
Young
Smart
Rozier

6th man
Hunter

Young has looked good so far, relative to his past play. He is in better position in help defense and has showed some potential in transition. I still think he has a long way to go with the mental aspect of the game.

Young can shoot the ball but isn't good at moving to open spaces to get quality looks, that is why his 3 point percentage is low despite having a good looking stroke.

RJ is already better at moving to an open space to get himself open, he understands where to be in help defense already.

The only argument that makes sense for Young playing over RJ is that Young has higher upside because he is younger, bigger, more athletic and has a higher release on his jumper.

This would be the only reason why I'd want Young playing over Hunter right now. In the grand scheme of things, I don't think it matters all that much since they're only getting 8 to 10 minutes a game, but I still hold out some sort of hope that Young still might amount to our athletic, shooting three that we've been sorely missing.

I think we are all happy young has shown progress from the summer league.  Early on I would peg him as a euro or Chinese league player.  His last few games he is upgraded To young prospect who is raw and maybe can help next year.
Hunter is a rotation player from the get go.  Maybe he won't garner a lot of minutes with our current team but he'll still see the floor.
Hunter bench limited minutes nba player if all are healthy.
Young maine

young copped out of lane agility and evrything after straining his groin on vertical -

but Young still had a higher vertical than RJ.....and 2 years younger. So lets not get into this.

Again, I'll go back to what I said earlier.  Once Smart comes back, this question will only be relevant in terms of practice minutes or minutes in Maine.

Young has been playing  consistent rotation minutes. The last four games, 16, 20, 13, and 16.  Coach asked him to play defense and take care of the ball – and if he makes shots, so much the better.  Well, he has neither taken nor made many shots; on offense he just sets up in the corner and rarely sees the ball.  As for what the team needs him to do, he rarely turns it over (just once in those 65 minutes), and has been quite a good defender. The team has mostly done well while he's in the game, and he was even given crunch time minutes in the second overtime on Friday. He was in the group that got them back in the game against Golden State in the third and fourth; and he was in the group that made the decisive run in the fourth against Chicago.

They are not asking much of him, but he's been delivering.

It would be nice if we could loan them both out to Philly; cut their teeth with heavy minutes, like in the EPL.

rj was one of top draftees at lane agility, shuttle run and sprints ar draftee combine with 33.5 verticle again good-one of hunters strengths is lateral movement and one of youngs weaknesses

young was again saved as shupert blew bye then bobbled ball, were those corner threes a result of slow recovery or being a bit out of position to close, did good job of being in the right place for rebounds-rj played only minutes but didn't hesitate on move to basket and a quick perfectly placed bounce pass to wide open zeller-with little time ran a pattern for a rushed three-
another good outing in terms of rebounding but youngs lateral speed and reaction time on defence is suspect but i am biased towards rj for reasons all basketball related-
some have posted youngs athleticism and youth as a advantage-young does have vertical and length but rj has skills far beyound his age and length and the biggie lateral-

go to draft express strengths and watch rj -the moves he makes are basketball moves and he has been doing them for years-then watch highlites at summer league and again same rj
watch his workout tapes leading to draft-

RJ 's biggest weakness may well be his shot, it is not horrible, but you can tell he was a guy who took volume shots in college.  I think he needs to become more of a marksmen in the NBA.   I love his basketball IQ.   He is not a poor shot, I think he could improve in this area and it will really help him.
