“We didn’t spend one second discussing an extension for him,” said Sullinger’s representative, the estimable David Falk. “Danny (Ainge) wasn’t in a position to give the max, so there was really nothing to talk about.

“I’ve never done a contract extension for a rookie who didn’t make the max since 1996. You have to understand I’m not a rookie in this league. The GMs all know.”

What does this mean for Sully's future here? Even the way he's playing now, I don't think he's worth the max.

That is a great philosophy for an agent but pulling the trigger on an extension when you know a guy is peaked is important as well.

Well, time will tell.  Danny is savvy enough not to do anything stupid.  Even with the way he's playing now, I don't think anyone thinks Sully is a max player.

Ainge wasn't about to offer a max deal but Falk knew that and Sully wasn't going to settle for a team discount extension given the amount of money teams are going to HAVE to spend, in some cases just to reach the salary floor. So it's not news that there were no extension talks.

BTW, Sully could very well end up with a max deal. Wouldn't surprise me. Just not sure it would be with the Celtics, actually probably won't.

I don't see Sully getting the max.  And I imagine if the offer was 90% of the Max, it would have been taken.  But Ainge has been focused on keeping cap space clear for next summer, so it would have surprised me if any sort of agreeable number could have been found.  Sully's cap hold next summer will be about $5.5 million if memory serves me correctly -- any extension higher than that would cut into cap room, so Ainge would have had to think he was getting a steal to agree to one now. Next summer if the parties agree, they can wait til cap room has been used and then sign a new deal that goes over the cap, as happened with Crowder this summer.  Ainge and Falk have negotiated multiple contracts before -- I think they both know how each other think at this point.

Can't see Sully getting the max unless he worked his way up to a comfortable 30-33 minutes a night without a drop in production.
I'd give Sully something generous if there was some kind of weight clause, but they can't be added to RFA extension deals so if someone overpays then good luck to them.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Max deal for Sully is crazy. Don't overpay for Sully, he's a decent backup center, that has back issues, and weight issues. It's too much work just keeping him anywhere near playing condition. One off season slip and he's 320 again.

Team friendly contract is ok.

This might technically be true (although I doubt it is looking at his client list on wikipedia), but isn't really true since Falk's clients include Evan Turner, Jeff Green, and Austin Rivers.

Truth (maybe) - every client who signed a rookie extension with Falk got max money (from Juwan Howard to Roy Hibbert).

The Real Truth - many of Falks clients don't get rookie extensions including guys like Evan Turner, Jeff Green, and Austin Rivers.

David Falk used to be the biggest agent in the world in the 80's/90's, now his client list seems pretty tiny and lacking of star power in comparison to what it used to look like.  Now he pretty much just represents Georgetown guys.

Tell me this doesn't seem shady:  Falk represented/represents former Georgetown coach John Thompson and current Georgetown coach John Thompson III, and also the following Georgetown alumn:

Sleepy Floyd
Patrick Ewing
David Wingate
Reggie Williams
Michael Jackson
Charles Smith
Jaren Jackson
Dikembe Mutombo
Alonzo Mourning
Don Reid
Allen Iverson
Othella Harrington
Jerome Williams
Jahidi White
Mike Sweetney
Jeff Green
Roy Hibbert
Greg Monroe
Patrick Ewing, Jr.
Otto Porter

Once Georgetown started becoming perennial powerhouse and NBA player factory in the early 80's, Georgetown has had 28 players go on to play in the NBA starting with Sleepy Floyd in '83.  At least 20 of them have been David Falk clients, possibly more (hard to know the scrubs who only ended up playing a handful of games in the league).

That just seems extremely shady to me, when an agent represents a coach and seemingly every single meaningful player who comes out of the school.  You see similar, but much less shady looking situation at Duke, where Falk represents Coach K and a handful of his players (Elton Brand, Corey Maggette, Austin Rivers, Johnny Dawkins, Danny Ferry, Bobby Hurley, Roshown McLeod), but not every single player.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

Pretty much my thoughts.

I wonder what team Sully will be on next year.
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

So what? What's the point of extending a guy coming off his rookie contract when he is going to be restricted free agent anyway. Let the market determine Sully's value ::)

Sullinger isn't a Center.
Jaylen Brown will be an All Star in the next 5 years.
