  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Celtics announcers just speculated that Detroit could end up trading Brandon Jennings to NY or Brooklyn. Can somebody come up with a reasonable package that the Nets could offer, since I'm having a lot of trouble doing so that Detroit wouldn't laugh at.

Mike
I don't think anyone is offering a first round pick for him. Maybe a couple second rounders gets it done.
Danny should call up Detroit and say whatever Brooklyn offers you, we will top.

Good call (and 100th TP!) - seems like a rule Danny should follow for any deal Brooklyn wants to make.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.

TP. At least this was a good day for our picks.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Denver outscored Minnesota 12-9 in the 4th quarter to win by 4 points. 2 crappy teams trying to lose or just 2 crappy teams?

Probably both.

Jarrett Jack, Hollis-Jefferson, McCullough and cash for Jennings and Joel Anthony, with whatever finagling is needed to keep the Nets below the tax line.  Problem is Jack's on the hook for another season at $6.3 million, all 3 guys have long-term injuries which won't help Detroit's playoff run, and I doubt Brooklyn wants to give up both their young prospects for Jennings.  Maybe they'd try to swap in Ellington for RHJ or something.  But you're right, it doesn't look practical.

• GM Billy King is conceding privately what we all know: The Nets aren’t making the playoffs. So it’s time to start breaking up the team. So far, Charlotte has called to try to deal for Bojan Bogdanovic, the team’s top 3-point marksman, Sporting News has learned. If Joe Johnson doesn’t get moved at the deadline, he’s seen as a prime candidate for a buyout.

The actual players obviously don't try to lose lol that would be stupid.

Brooklyn and Lakers are now separated by 2 wins, becoming a possibility that the Nets will end 2nd worst. Philly is on a tear as well winning 3 of their last 10 games.

Bojan has been good for them.  It would help us a lot if they traded him.  If they dump Joe, too, and start playing D-League talent on the wings, that should be more than enough, no matter how well Thad and Brook play.

Haha I found this statement funny. TP.

But why buy out Johnson? Is he getting in the way of better up and coming talent? With RHJ out for a while, I don't see any reason for them not to try and field a somewhat talented team...unless they planning on tearing the entire team down and getting as many 'assets' as possible.

Some more context on this, which seems likely to me:
1. Billy King's contract is up at the end of this year, and Prokhorov seemingly wants to replace him. http://www.eurohoops.net/featured/164476/prokhorov-wants-vatutin-as-gm.

2. The Nets stand to have a lot of cap room this summer.

It seems plausible to me that the plan is to dump players for picks this year, avoiding taking on long-term salary. (Lopez is probably exempt from that fire sale and perhaps Young).

Then, head into the summer with a few picks, tons of cap room and a new GM who can try to improve the team.

Given the box the Nets have put themselves in, this might be their best option.

I think you're probably right that Johnson wouldn't move the needle too much since they can't trade him for anything of value. Maybe they just want to be nice and give him a chance to play for a contender.
