I think the point you're making is valid.

That said, there is something to the idea that people can be biased by the state of the league when they first gained their passion for the game.

With Rondo, I recognized in myself that part of what bothered me about him was that his skillset was so different than the point guards I enjoyed and idolized most -- Steve Nash and Tony Parker.  Similarly, I imagine I'll always compare any wing scorer for the Celts against prime Paul Pierce.  So for me, Rondo's weakness as a shooter and scorer was frustrating, while Jeff Green's general lack of swagger and assertiveness made it very difficult for me to appreciate him.

My dad enjoyed watching the Celts most during the late 70s and 80s, so he appreciates big men who can play in the post, and rankles at the increased emphasis on the outside shot.  For him the mid-range shot is the best shot outside the paint, and the three should be a last resort.  The thing that bothered him most about Rondo was his inconsistency on defense and his tendency to slow the pace way, way down at the end of games.

fair enough. I think Rondo is hs an X factor about him. They way he could just will us to victory in playoff games. The way he could take LBJ on D for a few plays when others were struggling. He came back with 1 usable arm for crying out loud. Then he tore his ACL. But he is only 29. I just don't get why people would consider him down for the count. I think he still has a few years of close to prime play and another few of very serviceable play.

What gets me here, is people trying to paint him as a selfish player or focusing on the the things he couldn't do well when there were so many things he could do wel. I guess I should have made the OP to just say I wish him well in Sac, maybe it was the bring him back part that p---ed people off. But c'mon, this thread is 11 pages now and I think I'm one of 2 or 3 people to say- Hey I liked Rondo when he was here and I hope he does well in Sac.

I liked Rondo a lot as a complementary piece, and then I gained increased appreciation for him during the 2009, 2010, and 2012 playoffs.

What bothered me about him was the glaring flaws he did have, and more than anything the huge disparity between how he played in the biggest games and how he played on a typical night during the regular season. 

That combined with the fact that some people were willing to say he was an out-and-out superstar and the best point guard in the league, despite those flaws and inconsistencies.  It just felt like I couldn't be on "Team Rondo" because it was so one-sided.  I felt that he had shown he was good enough that we deserved to set expectations higher than he was reaching on a consistent basis.

The games I have most enjoyed watching as a Celtics fan have all involved big plays by Rondo, though.  If I look at him in a negative light, now, it's that he ultimately never amounted to what I thought he could have in a Celtics uniform.

Right.  Great example of how, so often, "hate" in this context meant anybody willing to criticize or raise doubts about his game rather than praise him for being a great passer and revel in his standout performances.

yeah yeah yeah, this thread is full of nice people saying nice things about rondo, ok. It' always, he was good, but... I kind of get where Pho is coming from. The Rondo support at his best was a bit over the top. I guess I am too. Maybe he was never the best, bet there were certainly nights, ever weeks where he was clearly the best player on the planet. I just find it hard to believe that someone could fall so fast. So, whats the measure of success for Rondo in Sac? What would make people change their tune? Playoffs? that seems about right. If Rondo can't lead Sac to the playoffs than I am wrong, he still doesn't have it.

I think he just broke a lot of hearts in boston. Post big 3 we wanted it to be his team and for us to be winning, But he can't do it alone and thats not really a konck on him. He is no LBJ.

I know I'm being a bit of **** here (and DOS and others are too) but c'mn lets show rondo some respect. He made us a really fun team to watch. We all wanted him to be something that he wasn't. I for one thought he would eventually become a pretty good shooter and that hasn't happened yet. But why does there need to be 10 negative rondo comments for every one positive one on a flippin' celtics fan site? (and most of those positive one are from me!)

I still think he can be a top 5 player. I'm going to keep this thread alive even if no one else does. Lets make thi the thread to root Rondo on in Sac. I really like Crowder too, but my love for Rondo will never die and my love for the Celtics is never in question.

Whenever, come back Rondo and lead us to more championships!

There are too many things out of Rondo's control for his success to be judged strictly on the Kings ability to make the playoffs as the measuring stick for success or not, injuries etc
My take would be if he can receive a multi year contract offer greater than the 9 mil or so he received from the Kings this off season. Teams actually willing to fork over the dough in the belief that he is actually still capable of running an effective offensive.
It would help if he could get his free throw shooting woes sorted out, that performance last season, just appalling man , hate or no hate , just turrible as Barkley would say.
