So dumb. How is Miami's future 2nd round pick an asset? I don't get what Ainge is doing. Really annoyed with the unbalanced Roster. He's going to damage the growth of his young players if he has a bunch of guards.

It's pretty simple.  Dragic is highly unlikely to make the team.  If he were likely to make the team, the C's wouldn't get the pick.  They are being compensated with the pick for saving Miami money.  In the future, if the C's are in a situation where they need to dump a contract or two to get under the luxury tax or create more cap room, they will be able to use this pick, or the Detroit pick they got from OKC for PJ3.  It's about using the cap flexibility they have now to acquire distant assets that might help create cap flexibility in future years.  It's very smart, and good long-term planning.  I wouldn't be surprised if Dragic were just released before training camp.

Right...But even with Dragic cut this roster is imbalanced. Nobody wants your second round picks, especially one that is so low. The evidence is from this offseason when Ainge tried to cash in. Please remember that Mickey was a high second round pick and let's see what he turns into. If his is Taj Gibson, then yeah, great pick. But if he's another Brandon Bass, who cares. We just had Brandon Bass and nobody was willing to give anything of value for him. I get your point about flexibility, but nobody wanted anything we had to offer this year. So I don't understand why obtaining a 2nd round pick should be considered an asset. AND I don't see how this resolves my concern of an ubalanced roster. They need to play the young guys and force them to accustomed to playing against good competition instead of playing against D-leaguers.

Okay, whatever dude.  Makes no sense to be upset.  They got a free draft pick.  Literally free (Miami is paying Dragic' salary).  Generally free things aren't super valuable, but they're better to have than not have.

I like this deal on two fronts.

The first is that we just picked up a second rounder practically for free.  That's never a bad thing, even if it's relatively unlikely to ever turn into a major asset. 

The second is that the Heat make room for Josh Richardson, who is a personal binky of mine.  He's a good kid, he's better than people think (lol at 'improved shooter' in that article - he has always been a knockdown midrange shooter), and I hope he makes it in the NBA.  Looks like he's going to get a shot.

Yeah, you're right. They won the trade...Just don't know if it means much in the overall picture. And I'm not upset about the trade, just annoyed with the roster.

Hard to see a downside to a free draft choice. The only outside possibility would be if a good deal materializes and we have a hard time creating the necessary cap space even after attaching draft choices to our players and trading them without taking salary back. That's a really remote scenario.

Am I missing something here? How is it a "free" draft choice? Even if we cut him we will still owe him the $1.7 mill on his contract. Granted we had cap space, but aren't we still spending that money for that draft choice?
I'd say 1.7mill is kind of expensive for a "free" draft choice" there aren't many second rounders that make that much to begin with.

Unless i'm completely wrong here?
