Am I missing something here? How is it a "free" draft choice? Even if we cut him we will still owe him the $1.7 mill on his contract. Granted we had cap space, but aren't we still spending that money for that draft choice?
I'd say 1.7mill is kind of expensive for a "free" draft choice" there aren't many second rounders that make that much to begin with.

It's being reported that Miami is sending cash over to help pay for the contract, which makes sense for Miami because they're in repeater-tax territory so paying Boston something to take the contract means saving millions later.

This, from Chris Forsberg, is basically how I feel:

The team was essentially at its 15-man maximum before bringing in Dragic and Jones. Even if those two players are ultimately waived, Boston will have collected two second-round picks for its troubles, and the team has clearly embraced asset collection during this rebuilding process.

It's kind of a no-brainer again by Danny. He takes the trade and waives Dragic and Miami pays his full salary. We gain a 2020 2nd rnd pick. A free pick is good but helping competitors get free from salary problems I am not sure is in our best interest unless the pick turns out to be a good one.

This is why Ainge is a genius, and why hes the GM, and we aren't...

There are a lot of teams with cap space that could potentially take on contracts, but Ainge is the only person that has really been able to do so.

A unprotected 2020 pick is far away, but you never know the longevity of Chris Bosh's career, and what future the Heat is looking like.

Miami is sending cash considerations, and all BOS had to do was take on his contract, and tell Ainge to waive Zoran.

I mean... heck, they gave us a free second round pick, and we also got another for the Jones contract... I mean what more could you want without the exception of fireworks? Lee, Amir, and Jerebko's contracts are gold, especially since the more picks we acquire; more chances of striking on a player that can develop nicely like Hunter, Young, Mickey, etc as trade bait to match salaries for a disgruntled superstar is all right with me.

By trading the contract to the Celtics with some cash, they're basically paying the salary themselves but because the contract isn't on their books, they don't have to pay the repeater penalties on the contract, which is pretty steep at this point for a team like Miami.
