Assuming that Jordan Mickey is here to stay, what are our options to sign him?

Danny Ainge is very fond of offering 3-year deals with team-options/non-guarantees to 2nd round rookies. How he previously accomplished this is that he used a portion of the MLE to sign his 2nd rounders. Players like Gabe Pruitt, Leon Powe, Phil Pressey (undrafted), etc. were examples of this. An exception was made with Glen Davis who signed just a two-year deal.

Still think that Ainge will try to go for a 3-year deal.

So what options does he have? Once we decided to use Cap Space we lost these exceptions that we previously used to sign rookies to team friendly multi-year deals.

As it currently stands, prior to signing Crowder and trading Wallace we have $9M approx of cap space to work with which could be used towards this effort.

If we don't do anything with that cap space, and trade Wallace (acquire Lee) and still haven't signed Crowder, we'll have approx. $3.6M.

If we sign Crowder, but still have Wallace we'll have about $4M approx. This will complicate the Lee trade afterwards, since after the trade is done we'll be over the cap, so we'll be subject to some restrictions (I think this is the scenario that involves the sending of non-guaranteed contracts to make it work).

Anyways, once we sign Crowder and acquire Lee we'll be over the cap. And we'll be over the cap without the exceptions I mentioned prior.

What option do we have then? Well there's a recent exception called Room Mid-Level Exception, which this season will be for $2.8M and it's available for teams who use cap space (hence missing the other exceptions).

So, I bring this up because A) Want to confirm with someone else if that exception can be used to sign a 2nd round rookie to a 3-year deal, and B) To give you guys all the alternatives we have at our disposal to accomplish this.

UPDATE: Just learned that the Room Exception can only be used to sign a player to a two-year contract, so that won't be of use if we want to sign a 3-year deal.

Pressey for example, signed a three-year deal of about $2.3M, with the starting salary of about $500,000, a bit less.

I think Jordan Mickey will be quite a bit more expensive, probably in the $800,000 starting salary range. The minimum salary is currently $525,093 for a rookie, and next year his minimum salary will be $874,636 [I'm not sure if these numbers fluctuate depending on salary cap jumps].

So there you have it, the options with which we'll be able to sign Mickey to a multi-year deal. Do you guys think we'll see a 3-year deal for Mickey?

What about Jonathan Holmes, you think he'll score a similar contract with us if roster space can be manufactured?

Dont all second rounders have the same minimum contract value? I dont think min contracts go against your cap or exceptions.

 I could be wrong here.

It will probably 3 years, 2nd and third years nonguaranteed (so we'll have him for restricted free agency

$800-850k makes sense for year one, possibly the minimum after that, maybe a little over

Holmes (provided we sign him to more than just a camp contract) will have a similar deal, maybe less money in year 1
I'm bitter.

Hence the point of the post was on how to accomplish a 3-year deal that Ainge likes (and I prefer as well). And to do that you have to offer a contract above the minimum (else, why bother?).

I dont see why he would get paid more then Pressy.  Offer this guy the min with team options after each year.

So just sign him to a two year deal.

Who said anything about being paid more than Pressey? Pressey's contract for this year is $900,000+. And there's a reason why Mickey was selected high 2nd round vs. being undrafted.

So just sign him to a two year deal.

The main point is to get a promising rookie on a 3-year deal to get his Bird Rights in a cost controlled manner.

If you guys don't see the value in doing so, to say nothing of the value of non-guaranteed contracts for trade purposes if needed be, then I don't know what to say.

Sign for as many years as possible according to CBA. He looks decent enough to crack 10mins in the rotation his first year. That may become 26mins by year three that is a $5-7 million dollar player so crazy value.

I thought 2nd round picks needed to be signed by the end of summer or they become FA?

Na', you have the rights for a full year and it gets more complicated when they start playing pro elsewhere, us keeping their rights, etc. I'm a bit murky on how it works. But no, you retain the rights for at least a year (next draft pretty much).
