Assuming that Jordan Mickey is here to stay, what are our options to sign him?
Danny Ainge is very fond of offering 3-year deals with team-options/non-guarantees to 2nd round rookies. How he previously accomplished this is that he used a portion of the MLE to sign his 2nd rounders. Players like Gabe Pruitt, Leon Powe, Phil Pressey (undrafted), etc. were examples of this. An exception was made with Glen Davis who signed just a two-year deal.
Still think that Ainge will try to go for a 3-year deal.
So what options does he have? Once we decided to use Cap Space we lost these exceptions that we previously used to sign rookies to team friendly multi-year deals.
As it currently stands, prior to signing Crowder and trading Wallace we have $9M approx of cap space to work with which could be used towards this effort.
If we don't do anything with that cap space, and trade Wallace (acquire Lee) and still haven't signed Crowder, we'll have approx. $3.6M.
If we sign Crowder, but still have Wallace we'll have about $4M approx. This will complicate the Lee trade afterwards, since after the trade is done we'll be over the cap, so we'll be subject to some restrictions (I think this is the scenario that involves the sending of non-guaranteed contracts to make it work).
Anyways, once we sign Crowder and acquire Lee we'll be over the cap. And we'll be over the cap without the exceptions I mentioned prior.
What option do we have then? Well there's a recent exception called Room Mid-Level Exception, which this season will be for $2.8M and it's available for teams who use cap space (hence missing the other exceptions).
So, I bring this up because A) Want to confirm with someone else if that exception can be used to sign a 2nd round rookie to a 3-year deal, and B) To give you guys all the alternatives we have at our disposal to accomplish this.
UPDATE: Just learned that the Room Exception can only be used to sign a player to a two-year contract, so that won't be of use if we want to sign a 3-year deal.
Pressey for example, signed a three-year deal of about $2.3M, with the starting salary of about $500,000, a bit less.
I think Jordan Mickey will be quite a bit more expensive, probably in the $800,000 starting salary range. The minimum salary is currently $525,093 for a rookie, and next year his minimum salary will be $874,636 [I'm not sure if these numbers fluctuate depending on salary cap jumps].
So there you have it, the options with which we'll be able to sign Mickey to a multi-year deal. Do you guys think we'll see a 3-year deal for Mickey?
What about Jonathan Holmes, you think he'll score a similar contract with us if roster space can be manufactured?
