I wouldn't even bet on Smart becoming an all-star let alone a superstar.  He looks like he's made some progress in summer league, though.  I still don't think he's a good offensive player yet.

Bro, first you said he was going to be like Tony Allen before even giving him the chance to have a whole offseason to work on his game. We've talked about this before and you decided to judge him before letting his second season play out, haha. At least I admit when I'm wrong. Have you ever admitted you are wrong?

Now you're saying he made some progress? That makes no sense at all since you said he wouldn't make progress after his rookie year and called him Tony Allen.  Did you see how timid he was last year? IMO, he has made great progress, as much as I would expect after one season under his belt.

Anyways, we'll see how good Marcus Smart will be when the season starts. But I'll be laughing my butt off if he's an all star.

That's because Smart isn't a Sixer. If he were LarBrd wouldn't stop talking about him.

I say Marcus Smart will be our next Superstar. Not just because he is impressive in summer league. It's because:
1. He has a winning presence.
2. He is willing to work hard and get better.
3. He loves and studies basketball.
4. His grit and blue collar work ethic rubs off on all the other players.

I love everything about this kid.

Depends of your definition of superstar.
If it's the type of player like Buttler, then yes, it's a possibility Smart become that level of player.
If it's the type of Durant, James, Davis, then no, very unlikely.
But I would say that it might become our franchise player one day. If that is not too confusing.

Being a Sixer helps, but the problem is that he's on the Celtics. It's not like anyone expected the virulent Smart haters to change their opinions after SL games, and I can't blame them, it is just Summer League. I'll be annoyed once he's putting up 15 and 5 in the regular season and his detractors don't admit that they were wrong.

He can reach the same level as Al Jefferson did in 2007, which is a player who imposes his will. Although with Smart, it would also include defense. That maybe doesn't equal a superstar, but a team leader and borderline All-Star. Based on his progression from the rookie year to what we have seen so far in summer league, signs point to a stellar further development, because not many players improve drastically right after their rookie season.

I think what gets lost here is that while Smart is the best rookie the Celtics have drafted in the last eight or nine years he's not necessarily a lock for being an All-Star caliber player, and recognizing that is hardly the disservice that many would make it out to be.

And I say this as someone who wanted the C's to draft Smart -- which was not anything close to a consensus opinion this time last year.

Would you trade him for Kevin Durant?

He may be the best defensive PG in the NBA already. Once he gets his offensive numbers up high enough to get some recognition outside of Celtics Nation I think he'll get the praise he deserves for his defensive play.

As soon as I saw the title of this thread I had a good chuckle.

Boston Celtic fans under no circumstances can ever publicly admit that good things might actually happen to us. Its in our DNA. The ping pong balls are against us, our draft pics will be busts and no free agent will ever come here.

Given these rules, Marcus will definitely not become a superstar. Secretly thinking he does have a chance though. Perhaps more of a star vs superstar.

I'm still just hoping he'll be a long-term starter.  Obviously he is a good defender but that's a role player to me.  Still needs to find a niche offensively.  And quite frankly, I am shocked at how un-explosive he is.

So my projection is still that he'll be a role player-defensive specialist type.

I felt that way (about his lack of explosiveness) too until I watched him play last night. Did you?  He was very explosive.  could very well have been a bad ankle holding him back.
