I didn't originally post in this thread but thought I would say a few things:
First, let's assume PJIII gets cut. That makes things easy and is the most likely outcome come time to trimming down the roster.
Second, let's assume health, at least to begin with.
That leaves 15 rostered players but only 12 players that can be active on any given night. This means that the players towards the end of the bench will see very little practice time and no playing time once the season gets going.
Now if those players are rookies or second year players they can be sent to the D League to work on their game and stay in game shape. So the best thing is most likely to send three players to the D League
But who?
Well, with the logjam in the frontcourt Mickey is a given. Unless there are trades or injuries to rid the team of at least 2 frontcourt players, Mickey is destined for the D League all year. Some diehard Mickey fans on this site have to accept that fact.
That leaves two positions to be able to send to the D League out of three players: Hunter, Rozier and Young. Personally I think Young is destined for another D League run but I admit I could be wrong. If I am wrong then all three of our rookies are going to the NBDL and Young will ride the bench with Boston waiting for blowouts so he can play. And let's face it, pretty much out of the three players, Young, Rozier, and Hunter, whichever player makes the team and doesn't get sent down, they will be riding pine awaiting garbage time minutes.
So if Young goes down to Maine again, it comes down to who the staff and front office will benefit the most from being around the vets and learning from them and the little practice and game time he will get, Rozier or Hunter.
After three pre-season games and the Summer League, I can't decide which player it could be. I don't see how anyone else can be 100% sure either as most of the evaluation process of these players is probably happening in practice.
Personally, I think the team needs a third PG on this team more than a third SG. I am sure others will argue the team is better off with Hunter being the backup SG because of his skill at shooting the three. I don't see that. If he makes the team he is on the depth chart behind Bradley, Smart when he plays with IT, and Turner when Stevens wants to go big and Have Jerebko at SF and Turner at SG with Smart at PG.
