If the reports on the money are accurate, Johnson would fit into the Rondo TPE.

That's what I'm hoping for.  I think this was a short-term overpay to maintain long-term flexibility.  But I really hope this isn't where most of our current cap space is going.

I just don't really understand the point.

This is a win-now signing, not unlike the Nets signing Kris Humphries to the same contract a few years back.

Why use all that money on a stop-gap option when it will only marginally improve the team and we're still lacking core talent?

Anyone else p---ed off about this signing?

I'm at least ... perplexed.

Signing Amir to such a huge deal signals that the team does not expect to be much of a player in the free agent market.  Not a great surprise.

But it means that despite not being a major player, the team is willing to spend money on stop-gap options that will keep the team closer to the middle.

Settling for mediocrity does not make me happy at all.  Go big or jettison the extras and let the young guys play.

Instead we're spending $12 million per year to replace Bass with a slightly taller guy who is worse offensively and slightly better defensively.

Unless, as Who worriedly ponders, Johnson is on a permanent decline, he's a far superior defender to Bass and at worst an equivalent offensive player.

Draft: 8 first rounders in next 5 years.

Cap space: $24 mil.

You're right about Bass. Why not just keep him for cheaper.

The only thing that makes any sense is we just found out Harris was a no and same with Monroe, leaving Ainge with some blow money.

Not a big fan of this move....over pay for youth not 28 year olds....hope this doesn't hurt our chances at Harris.

On a side note Warriors talks with D.Green just broke down and now he is talking to other teams.

the signing broke Celticsblog  ::) ::) ::)

jokes aside, I actually like Amir Johnson's game. 12 mil is a bit much, but it's only 2 years, and I think he's an upgrade over Zeller. Slow and steady. We're still in rebuild mode, and can't expect to be instant contenders this season. Not the end of the world.

I just hope we can sign Harris though.

Sure, but what's the point, big picture?  Or are we spending $12 million per season for an incremental improvement?

Are people confused? The cap is going UP. Not DOWN.

Most of the deals signed today league-wide will look great when the cap is adjusted.  Chill out.

I love the signing. Time to let Bass walk to a real contender. Or I wouldn't mind keeping Bass as long as we got rid of Olynyk.
Long-form is far from dead, but please refrain from paragraph-laden posts! Who wants to read that?!

Immediately becomes the C's highest paid player.

NBA trivia tidbit:  last player to go from high school senior to the NBA, Amir Johnson.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

Bass was one of our better defensive bigs last year and was a lot cheaper.

I'm all for patience.  What's the rationale for signing a guy like Amir Johnson when you're still rebuilding, though?  Is the idea that it helps the younger guys develop better?  How does aiming for the middle fit in the long term strategy?

he's a pretty solid rim protector... short money deal.. keeps long term flexibility.. not bad at all.

I like the move, very solid.
