I'm curious what happened here. Did he push his meeting back with us a day? Did he decide out of the blue that he had no interest in Boston? Or did Boston decide not to look at him because they got interest from someone better?

I really hope it's the last option.

It's probably more that he can only meet with so many teams in a given day and pushed back other teams to a different day.  It seems to suggest the teams he meets with first are his top options, though.

Bulpett's report echoes this one -- the Celts aren't the #1 choice for anybody of note.

As long as they're still interested, then I think there's a chance.

guys, move on. we aren't getting Monroe. you can not believe it and flail and scream and yell until you're blue in the face but it is what it is, we aren't landing any of the big time FAs.  Monroe is maybe the highest we would possibly do but it was my belief all along that any 'interest' Monroe had in joining us was all agent driven in order to get teams into a bidding war and maximize his client's offers.

be happy if we actually are able to get some traction with Tobias.  Monroe aint happening

Source?

my source is history.  big time FAs end up in 1 of 2 areas:

1 - warm weather/great nightlife cities, usually (but not necessarily) with big media markets (miami, LA, ny/Chicago [yes not warm weather but a huge media/marketing area], orlando, TX, etc)

2 - contending clubs that are possibly championship contenders (think how we were able to get the Shaq's and Sheed's of the world when we were competing)

young guys that have freedom to choose for the first time in their professional careers aren't going to choose to go to a city like Boston.  it's something i've been preaching since joining the boards, and everyone jumps at the chance to tell me how wrong i am, but we will see.

just don't get your hopes up that we're going to be able to reel in any big fish the size of Aldridge, Butler, Love, etc.  i always thought there was a faint chance of Monroe based more in the fact that he's not exactly a superstar and we have money to burn, but even he seemed like a pipedream.  make no mistake, someone will certainly take our money, but it's going to be more a case of us overpaying for guys to come spend their winters here than it will be guys that want to be Celtics.

but now i'll sit back and wait to be mocked and told i'm crazy for reciting facts and that i don't know what i'm talking about.

Ryan Ward: Consensus: Greg Monroe will land in NY. ? Don?t count out the Lakers, though. LA could make strong push if they feel Aldridge can?t be had.

When was the last time Boston had cap space to sign free agents?

I will be flabbergasted if Monroe signs with the Lakers.  They've got Russell, one more season of Kobe being a pain and...that's about it.  I cannot conceive of Monroe jumping from a bad and losing situation in Detroit to a bad and losing situation in the much tougher Western Conference.

sigh........please stop with this argument. yes it's been a while but that means nothing.  look around.  we're barely a mention with any of the big names, and if we are it's in the middle of a long list.  and you realize free agents don't just sign with teams with space right?  never once has a FA, whether ufa or rfa, said 'i want to play in boston.'  no sign and trades, no signings, it just doesn't happen.  no we haven't had cap space in a while, but maybe now that we have, come the end of July, everyone will get to see what a baseless argument that actually is....

or who knows, maybe i'm completely wrong and Aldridge and/or Love and/or Monroe will all want to be here and we've been the silent assassins all along.  I'd love to be wrong.  I just don't see how i am....

But playoffs and history and young mid level talent ??? ::)

I agree.  Players don't care about that stuff anymore.  Especially young players.  They're gonna go where they want so they can get what they want ie brand notoriety, championships, or the lifestyle.  It's best for us to hold onto and find players that want to be here.

On the one hand, it's fair to note that Boston's lack of success in getting free agents has to be tempered by the fact that we've rarely had meaningful cap space.

On the other, it's also fair to note that teams with lots of cap space have generally been a minority of the league, but they likely won't be for the next few years, so if we really aren't a "preferred destination", having lots of cap space won't be an advantage over a lot of cities that are.

...problem is if you believe that, and you believe NY, LA, DAL, etc are going to blow most if not all of their cap space this summer, arguably the best thing we could do with ours this year is bid up some deals but mostly stand pat.  Which is kinda depressing.

The Celtics either sucked and/or did not have the cap space to sign free agents, and there were players who did express their desire to play in Boston before.

LOL.

"When was the last time Ainge landed a major free agent? Huh?"

"Ainge has never had more than the MLE to spend on a free agent."

"Who cares? That's irrelevant. Answer my question! You can't, can you? I win."

I may have to make this my sig.

Honestly, if there's no opportunity to take a big step forward, I'd like to see Danny make some moves to prune the roster a bit, a.k.a. engineer downward.

25 wins or 50 wins.  Let's not aim for in-between.

Take on some exprirings for picks. I'm glad to see that people have woken up to free agents rejecting Boston.
