I really thought the league was going to catch up to the Celts a bit this year, that they wouldn't be taking anybody by surprise this time around.
I was wrong. The Celts have struggled at times this year, but since they solidified the rotation, they've looked like a team that knows what it does well and has the confidence to keep doing it even when things aren't going well, and that allows them to stay in games. They almost always play hard, and they've figured out ways to keep the offense going when Isaiah isn't in the game, or when Isaiah is struggling.
Crowder has added elements to his game, and he's doing things I didn't think he could do. Turner has been pretty much the same, but he's confident in his role and the team seems to have figured out how to work around him. Not as much standing and watching when Turner is doing his jazz-solo ball-handler thing.
Overall, the Celts find ways to score a lot of points even when it seems like they're not doing anything especially well on offense. Lots of second and third efforts, and just keeping the ball moving.
They've also played excellent team defense. They don't seem to have the personnel to lock down opponents, but they're just so aggressive that I think they still, despite having done this for over a year now, catch opponents off-guard.
I thought their ceiling this year was 45 wins, but it now looks like they'll be comfortably ahead of that.
It will be very interesting to see if they can carry over this success to the playoffs. I still have concerns that when things slow down and the intensity rackets up in the playoffs, it'll be much harder for the Celts to succeed in the ways they've been succeeding.
Specifically, my concern is that their 25th ranking in Defensive Rebound Rate will catch up to them -- especially since they still don't shoot particularly well as a team, ranked 21st in TS% -- and they won't be able to take advantage of playing at a top 3 pace. Despite the top 3 pace, the Celts are below average in free throws attempted per game. The playoffs are in large part about rebounds and free throws.
But I may be underestimating them again.
