This is very strange. Player says foot feels great. Surgeon says something doesn't look right, something that looked fine in March.
Why not just play him and if the foot blows out again, then have season ending surgery?
I guess if the surgeon says there is a risk not just of re-injury but the whole foot falling off or something, then you have to sit him. It seems like either way, worst case is he misses another season.
well obviously the worst case scenario is that it never heals and he is never able to play professional basketball..
Clay... why would that even be a possibility here? He has been playing basketball for a couple months. The dude has been going full-tilt. He feels 100%. He feels no pain. He himself thinks he's ready. The worst-case scenario is that they go, "Well... ok... you feel 100%, but the CT scan shows you'll never be 100%..." At that point are you expecting him to never play basketball?
That doesn't make any sense. Everything I've read about the guy is that he can play basketball right now. He's in game shape RIGHT NOW. The risk is re-injury.
I have a partially torn ACL right now. I'm not a high end athlete so it's not that huge of a deal. It doesn't prevent me from jogging. I could have surgery to fix it. CT scans would show that I'm not 100%... and probably will never be 100% until I address this... but it's not going to prevent me from light jogging. I'm taking a risk every day, while light jogging, that my partially torn ACL will turn into a full tear. That's the risk with me. But you're suggesting, "well it looks like LarBrd33 might never jog again"... why? I've been jogging with this partial tear for 10 years.
Embiid feels ready to play basketball. The CT Scans might show that he isn't fully healed. There's no chance he'll "never play basketball" unless they decide he has to have ANOTHER surgery to try to fix it 100%... and then that surgery is botched.
My assumption is different than you guys. My assumption is that Embiid is healthier now than Greg Oden was during his first attempt to come back from injury. My assumption is that Embiid could suit up right now, play basketball, be effective... but that they want to make [dang] sure this doesn't end up another Greg Oden situation where they let him come back 95% healthy and make an ok situation terrible. Fwiw, players play with risk every day. Brandon Roy is a good example... his situation was concerning from day 1 and the inevitable happened... that's why Danny didn't want him when he was drafted. Ray Allen played several years with screws in his ankles. Steph Curry has been playing the last several years with papier-mache ankles of his own... but he's managed to have an MVP championship winning season. There's still risk that Steph blows out his ankles.
The situation with Embiid might be similar... is there a way to make him 100%... would a smaller corrective surgery help?... can they do something to secure his long-term future?... or does he just need to be one of those guys who plays with risk? My assumption is that this is what they are discussing with doctors.
