Perhaps they are in denial, but the consensus amongst Philly fans seems to be that this is old/minor news.  There's no pain.  There is no reinjury.  There's no announcement yet of any surgery.  Just that it hasn't healed the way they want.  The timing of it is peculiar. 

They seem to think this has to do with DeAngelo Russell.  He cancelled his workout with Philly and it lead to wild speculation.   Russell has been widely believed to be Philly's target... but the Knicks are basically in "Russell or bust" mode since Mudiay is a poor fit for the triangle.  The speculation is that perhaps the Knicks have worked out a deal with the Lakers where the Lakers will take Russell ahead of Philly and send him to the Knicks... and since Philly has two franchise bigs already, they expect that Philly will be forced to take Mudiay and let Okafor fall.   They seem to be speculating that this news about Embiid is coming out to give the illusion that Philly is comfortable taking a big... and perhaps dissuade the Lakers from taking Russell for The Knicks.

Sounds very crazy.  I looked at a couple of sites to see if there was any updates as well as Philly news sights and saw nothing that elaborate as an explanation.  More often the comments  were cautious about what this means with an emphasis on Embiid not reinjuring his foot. On the other hand, others noted that he was already behind schedule and that the Sixers were now going to talk to other experts which was cause for alarm in their eyes. The latter was seen less often, but it has some credibility.

I'll give you something less crazy than the theory you saw somewhere. I think the Sixers leaked it to Woj (otherwise he's got a crystal ball) so that they could come out with a statement on Saturday.  Burying bad news on Friday after work or Saturday is standard operating procedure for managing bad news in press releases, but leaking it to Woj first makes it look that they were reacting to him rather than trying to bury it.

A few people thought the timing was strange and that the Sixers knew this already hence the stories showing up about the Sixers trying to get Saric over this week.

If this is legit, this is a real concern for Philly, as a big man whose foot hasn't healed properly over a full year is serious concern. If this is not legit, I think its Philly getting an early start to tanking next season.

There's also reports about how they are trying to bring in Saric this year... I dunno... it could be draft posturing. 

But also, Embiid isn't in any pain and he's been able to work out aggressively for a while.  The report just seems to suggest that it isn't healing as quickly as they hoped.  The 76ers made a statement about how they would adjust their plans accordingly.  I can see how someone can read that to mean, "Hey guys, we'd totally take a big here... seriously... it's not like DeAngelo Russell is the only guy we went... for reals"

Or maybe this is leaked because Philly believes there is a big as the best prospect over Mudiay or Russell. They may want bpa an excuse on injury concern would calm fans if the took another big and not the before mentioned players.

But on a serious note, it's definitely not good. He didn't really suffer a set back per se, but a guy who doesn't heal from injuries isn't going to be able to play in the NBA.

I still think it was worth the risk, he had more talent than anybody in the draft and it wasn't close. Sometimes risks don't pay off. The book isn't closed on him by any stretch either.

The Sixers still have a metric ton of cap space, a top 3 pick this year, Dario Saric overseas, 4 first round draft picks next year , and half of the 2nd round. They're far from screwed, but the margin of error is definitely smaller.

They're definitely in denial. It's not good, particularly if it indicates he's a slow healer long term. I'd say this is a major red flag, whereas I think Embiid's weight and the walking boot incident from earlier were much ado about nothing.

But until we see what the outcome is the chicken littles are overreacting as well.

He didn't get hurt or experience any pain from what I understand. It was just something they noticed in a regular check up on it. Hard to say how serious it is without the particulars.

LarBrd33, you are downplaying this a great deal.  Maybe it's old/minor news to Philly fans because they already expect Embiid to be the next Oden.  It's actually very major news when your potential best player can't stay healthy or heal from an injury before he ever played in an NBA game.  I'd say the Sixers' future forecast has just been downgraded a lot.
