Fellow CBers:

I want to do a little analysis...of players whose stock has jumped because of stellar NCAA tourney performances. The basic question is, does a stellar tourney performance create unwarranted hype - or does it show ability to thrive at the highest level of competition? It could go either way, I think.

But, I can't think of a great way to identify guys beforehand who've moved up because of great tourneys, so I'm looking for examples.

One that jumps to my mind is Trey Burke - I remember him moving from the 20s to the top 10.

Jeremy Lamb is another. Maybe Shabazz Napier. MKG. Etc.

Any others? If you supply the examples, I'll try to find out (a) how much each player's stock improved, and (b) whether it looks like the move up was justified or not.

If you want to jog your memories you can look at these draft lists:

http://www.basketball-reference.com/draft/NBA_2013.html

Or you could look at the All-tourney teams:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_NCAA_Men%27s_Division_I_Basketball_Tournament#Final_Four_all-tournament_team

Thanks in advance

Boris

This goes without saying but I will not be relying on the cached Chad Ford mocks for this analysis.

I read an article on players jumping up due to a strong NCAA tourney and their biggest example was D Wade. I'll try to remember where I read that.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

I remember the most recent biggest jump in tourney stock was probably Gordon Hayward.

Mike Bibby...he passed Pierce, Vince, and A Jamison

Throwing it back 20 years or so but Bryant Reeves (also forced Camby to stay another year).   Corliss Williamson in multiple tourneys.  Jared Jefferies was a big one from the '02 tourney.

Mario Chalmers more or less owes his entire NBA career to the NCAA.

Which, you know, is a pretty strong argument in favor of unpaid internships.  :P

Draft Express has a mock draft history for each prospect. Google Draft Express  20XX mock draft. Then select a name and look at their mock draft history.

Westbrook was like Wade.  Shabazz Napier last year is another.

Gotta try to remember context. I'm not sure at all, but possibly at the time of Bibby if the perception was you needed a good pg to win a ring, and they were impossible to find, but good swings were growing on trees or coming out of high school, that would partly explain something like a Bibby passing a Vince or a Pierce

Now I have to wonder if anyone stock went down due to a bad tourney.

Ed O'Bannon. His stock went up I assume. George Zidek. Tyus Edny. Hmmm.

To be fair I think some players had strong touneys and were underdrafted. Kyle Singler, Steve Blake, and Tayshaun Prince come to mind

Arguably Ron Mercer.  I kinda think that's recruiting hype. Walter McCarty and Tony Delk had fine careers

This is going way back but does anyone remember if Danny Manning was the consensus #1 pick before the 88 tourney?  Cuz he sure was afterward.  I don't remember anyone talking about Steve Nash til he led Santa Clara over the 2 seed Arizona, either, but I don't know what his draft stock looked like beforehand.

Also I can't believe the name Patrick O'Bryant hasn't come up.  2 good tourney games turned a lazy stiff into a top-10 pick.
