Tommy is harmless, but from a different era.

I feel for men raising daughters in this day and age. I've got two boys.

Couldn't even imagine having a daughter nowadays.

Don't feel bad for us.  I've got two daughters, aged eleven and thirteen.

Raising them has been the most rewarding and pleasurable part of my life.

You're such an amazing person of integrity revtodd, highly commendable.you must be so proud of yourself being the internet police on your high horse of what's right and what Tommy can say.
Who cares. Girlie is in no way derogatory, only to sensitive little internet police. Get over it bud

red was incredible at intimidating refs and using fans in home court strategy-this is one area that brad should cultivate -the well timed technical, even getting tossed -the  jerebko miss was nuts--was hey girlie offensive ,yes and meant to be,the  no call i didn't like was the repetitive shoulder barge and then a phantom foul on celtic also,a break away foul like  jerebko's  should be reviewed like clear path- back to ref baiting i know it's not politically correct but in past it was in itself a tool for some coaches and players--red looked for any edge,he elevated ref baiting to an art form-refs are crtical to game ,they control offense and defense, they protect some and let others travel and palm the ball-hey girlie  was mild compared to back in the day- but today its quick way to get attention-

Neither Rev, myself, anyone here - is perfect.

But we reserve the right to speak on things we don't agree with - whether people agree or not.

If someone called my grown wife "girlie" I wouldn't like it, either.

If this referee needs more polish that's one thing. But she doesn't need to be subjected to being called "girlie".

 ;D :) ;)

I'm not sure how expressing an opinion is being "internet police."  "Get over it" and sarcastic comments are a way of trying to limit opinions and a form of being "politically correct." If you want to defend "girlie" as Ok and not sexist, go ahead and test it out for yourself.  You see the Rev. in front of the name.  If I hear something I think is wrong, I'm going to say something.  Why?  Because I listen to the 51% of my congregation who are women, and they are tired of sexist comments and making less money than men, and being passed over because of their gender.

I like Tommy's commentary in general, I appreciate his basketball mind, and I think the officiating was terrible last night.  But he blew it, and he needed to apologize.  That's my opinion and its the opinion of most HR departments in the country.  If anyone thinks that's being sensitive or internet police, so be it.

When I hear people complain they are upset about stuff like this, I wonder how emotionally developed they are.

Rev the congregation you are preaching to here is not 51% women, does not face the same level of income inequality, and believes that refs should have thick skin regardless of their identity. Crickets from this group should not leave you in a state of disbelief. Tommy's comment wasn't the best choice of words but to inflate it to the level of social injustice is going to fall on deaf ears in many public forums.

One of the worst officiated game i've seen in a while. Maybe another ref on the floor would help. Maybe ridding the game of affirmative action refs would help too. It may be time to give coaches challenges, where the play can be reviewed, and the poor calls changed.

I don't know, but the game is suffering from terrible calls, and non calls. I understand each sport has it's own challenges on the subject, but this is too much.

Hey Tommy, its 2015 and there are women refs and women who are Celtics fans watching the game.  You are the one making the bad call tonight!  ::)   I have always been a Tommy fan, but he has spoiled the whole Tommy point thing.

So are you saying the female ref should've been treated differently? Tommy is literally ALWAYS on the refs, even the ones he's pretty good friends with. Pretty ridiculous to bring this up given the context.

I know, right?  Equality in this situation means being treated like every other ref.

When Tommy criticizes every other ref, does he refer to their gender?  If so, then whatever.  But I think we all know he doesn't, and therein lies the problem.  His yelling at the ref refers to her gender.  it would be a similar problem if yelling at the ref referred to the ref's race.  Neither race nor gender are relevant to the criticism, so they shouldn't be a part of it.

I love Tommy, but hr messed up, plain and simple.
yes, i understand that his generation (my father's, so i know it) was different and the habits learned in childhood are often hard to root out. to his credit, he 'fessed up and apologizied. sometimes that, and arming ourselves to be mindful a particular habit, are all we can do.

changing the unarticulated unconsciousness is almost impossible to do thoroughly or systematically. it is, after all, the unconscious. there are always unnoticed, buried habits/preferences through out all our lives and they appear at odd times, without intention and often against what we know is correct.

this is not just sexism, but racism, zenophobia, sense of humor, etc. these are habits of the heart as well as the mind. and they inhabit the unconsciousness of us all to varying degrees and in varying forms.

in tommy, i do not see a life pattern, intentionality, or repeated malice all in service of a personal agenda of hate or distain towards others. SL has the right of it --- he screwed up, realized it, and responded appropriately and sincerely.

i am ready to move on.

This particular referee was also involved in that game where a bunch of people were ejected for no good reason (and a handful of other ridiculous Ts were called in the process). She's clearly horrible, but knowing that the NBA has no real system of ref assessment, I don't expect this situation to be remedied.

Well rev, maybe you should have mentioned in your original post that Tommie said girlie and then apologized. Half stories just lead to trouble. It's the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Tommy also said that the refs should "go home and eat some fish".  Catholics everywhere should be offended.   ;)
Before a game on Christmas against the Pacers, Bird told Chuck Person that he had a present for him. During the game, Bird shot a 3-pointer in front of Person. Immediately after releasing the ball, Bird said to Person, "Merry F!#*ing Christmas!" and then the shot went in.
