He hasn't received much attention, but Ford seems to love him. He has him ranked 16th overall in the draft.

Malik Pope / SF
Ht - 6'10
Wt - 205
Age - 18

Positives
Freaky, versatile athletic forward
Explosive leaper
Runs the floor like a guard
Very skilled, can score from everywhere
Good handle for his size
Solid rebounder
Has range out to the three point line

Negatives
Needs to add strength
Missed a lot of development time in high school with injuries
Battling back from two leg injuries

Chad Ford

He has drawn the attention of a number of NBA scouts and GMs, many of whom have traveled to San Diego State and come away with the same feedback: "He's not ready now, but when he does get ready -- look out." With the 76ers owning a draft pick in the late lottery to mid-first round, Pope seems ready made to be their guy. He's everything Sam Hinkie is looking for: A player who's long, athletic and, most importantly, a potential (emphasize potential) home run. After Okafor, Towns, Mudiay, Russell and Porzingis, there isn't a player in the draft with more upside than Pope. You're just going to have to be very, very patient with him.

Here's what one general manager told me on Tuesday as I was prepping for the article: "If he were in the draft, I'm not sure you could pass on him once you move out of the lottery. He's not the same player, but he's got Antetokounmpo-type raw talent. On sheer raw capability, he's one of the five or six most talented guys in the draft.

He piqued my interest after that one game where he had like 2 blocks, a few steals, and some ear crushing dunks. He has a boatload of potential, but he has the same criticism as Lavert. Leg issues, injury history, missed a lot of time for conditioning/upper body strength due to time spent on the pine. And while he seems very explosive, at times struggles with creating his own shot.

I would definitely take a flyer on him or Lavert. I don't think he's a top 5 talent, but I think he's the type of player like Giannis who will definitely outplay his expectations under the right circumstances.

If this guy has the highest upside available when we pick then I am all for drafting him. I'd probably rather have a 19 year old with crazy tools than an established guy like Kaminsky at 16.
We already are deep, we need to be shooting for stars in the draft not looking for rotation guys.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Yeah I really don't want Kaminsky. We already have KO, and Jerebko is similar in terms of floor spacing shooting big.

Why are people set on drafting him...? He looks like a worse version of Spencer Hawes...

We should focus on a young SF.

Ainge doesn't like raw athletes...he'll take some slow unathletic senior guy with "high bbiq".

Marcus Banks, JR Giddens, and Gerald Green disagree.

The James Young pick disagrees with your statement.

My take on him is that he looks like he can really play when he has the ball and is doing his moves and dribbling.  At the same time, when it comes to Xs and Os and where he should be on the floor, he looks like a lost little fawn, all alone in the world.  He does hit threes and he does have elite size for an SF, with the agility to go along with it, so that's huge right out the gate.  It also does seem like if anybody could get this guy going, it would be Stevens.

The two questions for me are:

1.) how much did he play when he was a kid / how was he coached?  Because the whole lost on offense thing looks really weird with the fully developed other skills he has.  It's like he just stayed in his backyard practicing moves and never played in games or even watched them on TV.  It's just kind of odd...

2.) Are there any character issues here?  I'm asking because he drifts in and out of PT - and yeah, a lot of that is due to injuries - but he doesn't seem to be working as hard as he could.  He is in great shape though so he's obviously hustling there, it's just that again, something seems off.

I live in San Diego and am on campus at SDSU all the time and this guy is intriguing, but yeah something is just kind of off.  I can't even say his situation is like other high ceiling enigmas.

I also found this great article from Bright Side of the Sun - a great Phoenix blog - that's a good read.  http://www.brightsideofthesun.com/2015/2/27/8105127/phoenix-suns-draft-preview-the-mysterious-malik-pope

He's a crazy project with the tools, intellect and skill to be successful, but he needs to put it altogether and become a complete player.  I don't think that's very likely, but it's certainly possible given what I've seen.

Will Ford change his scouting once he does not pan out?

On talent alone this kid is a top half of the lottery pick. His development was stunted by his high school injuries and I really hope he stays in school. A player like this is the type of kid who if drafted by the wrong team never makes it in the league. If he stays in college for one more year and stays healthy he should be a 12PT+ 6RB+ guy and a shoe in for the lottery.

Agree totally.  He's not an upperclassman and he's not NBA-ready.  Much better to stay in college for another year or two to develop his skills and prove he can stay healthy.

this kid has skills. good handle, great size, very good shooter, borderline freaky athlete.... I'm all for drafting on upside, but he is not even close to being close to ready.. I would feel weird taking a wing player in the first round who averages less than 6 points per game

Hope the Chad Ford led hype does not draw him out. Let him develop then the Cs can draft him with the 2016 nets pick.

Looks like killer value in the late lotto. Drafting for upside is usually smart. He should stay in schooll a year as he clearly isnt NBA ready, but I dont see how you pass on somepne with PF length and PG quicks to go with 40% 3pt in the late lotto. it could be like drafting KD as a highschool sophomore...
