Nobody wanted to pay him 12 mil per year to be a starter. Plenty of teams were interested in a min contract bench role.  He doesn't need to be a star for us.  Just gotta defend inside and dunk.
McGee is currently an undervalued asset because of his recent history. Good time to pick him up.

Step 1: play McGee for 20 mpg and hope he puts up decent numbers for the rest of the season.

Step 2: trade for future second round pick.

You really can't fault Ainge for making this move. After watching Gobert in person last night it really makes you think of how good the C's might look just with someone like him. McGee is a very different player, but he's a true 7 footer with hyper-athletic skills and who's best attributes are shot-blocking and interior defense from the 5 spot. That's something we certainly need. He gives us a chance to go big or small, considering we can put Kelly at the 4 and Jerebko/ Crowder at the 3 or go small, depending on what the match-up calls for.

It's not gonna happen, but I wish we could make room for McGee by dumping Turner. You can't really complain with the results the way this squad has overachieved this year, but Smart should be bringing the ball up court and initiating our offense, not Turner. Marcus needs more shots, more time handling the ball and diagnosing defenses. ET probably makes close to the same amount of dumb plays that McGee does, but his talents and how hard it is to find a player of similar talents make him less valuable.

I'd love to see whether Zeller can actually play PF. Doubt it, though.

It's unquestionably a good move. I'll use classic rock songs to demonstrate.

1. "You Can't Always Get What You Want". But if you try sometimes, you get what you need. The Cs are desperate for an athletic big man who can fill a defensive void. Regardless of his BBIQ, McGee fills that need.

2. "Young Lust". McGee's defense will also allow young, athletic defenders like Bradley and Smart to take more risks and apply more pressure knowing he's behind them. If he's rotating in with the 2nd unit, he picks up the defensive slack that IT causes. He may lift everyone's defensive game.

3. "The Long and Winding Road". McGee had options. Instead of picking a team to ride the bench and maybe win some playoff games, he chose to go to a team where he could play and contribute. He likely realizes that this is THE spot to rehab his game and his reputation. That's an incredibly mature and encouraging thing to do. It means that he wants to play and wants to develop. The Cs are the ideal landing spot for him.

So let's hope that everyone can "Come Together" and there are no "Communications Breakdown"s. Only "Time" will tell. "I can't explain", but I have "High Hopes".
Jaylen Brown will be an All Star in the next 5 years.

at this point, my question  is why McGee is choosing to join the celtics and not go elsewhere?  apparently, there was a long list of teams that wanted to add him for bench depth this year. so, why? why did he pick the celtics?

p.s. just adding some information i just read on McGee. here is an article that points beyond McGee's youtube basketball slapstick and views his overall package of contributions. not sure if it correct, but it is an interesting read.

I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Playing time? A chance to play for one of the famous NBA franchises? Maybe he just wants to build some snowmen.

I feel like if Stevens can take a team to the playoffs that traded away Jeff Green and Rondo and has Turner and McGee on  it, he should get some sort of award??
I doubt we're making the playoffs seeding probably stays where it's at with Indiana and Miami taking the final spots.

I'm guessing playing time. McGee and his agent are looking to rebuild his value for after next year when his past contract is done and he needs a new deal to get paid.

Some writer posited that we guaranteed him playing time where contenders wouldn't guarantee him anything. Seems reasonable to me. By virtue of his size alone he should figure to have a prominent role on this team.

"Snowmen" is not the preferred nomenclature, dude. Snowpersons, please.

I think , based on the fact that we have some of our MLE left, we can also offer him a bit more money than most other teams.

This is shaping up to be a very interesting rebuilding contest.

On the one hand, Philly has gone all in on "The Plan."  They have set themselves on a path to be as bad as possible for multiple years in a row, banking on grabbing one or more franchise stars in the draft.  To do so, Hinkie has aggressively stripped the team of any player who might get in the way  of all the losing.

On the other hand, Boston is all about flexibility.  Ainge is accumulating as many assets as he can, even if it means poorer draft odds and taking up cap room.

Philly has a much clearer path forward but no fallback position if things don't work out.  Boston's future is more muddled but is better positioned to respond to changing circumstances.

Mike
Philly hasn't done anything to limit their flexibility.  They've got good assets to trade if a star becomes available.  They've got cap room for a couple max free agents.  They've got great draft picks.  If Philly ownership decides they want to compete for a playoff spot next season, Hinkie could acquire enough mediocre talent required to do so in the weak East.  What flexibility do the Celtics have that the Sixers don't?

But as we know the star usually gets his choice of where to go by threatening that he will opt out or not sign a longer-term contract with a team he doesn't like, i.e. Love, Dragic, etc.  What star is going to want to go to Philly after all that they've been through with the years of tanking? We would be MUCH MUCH more attractive to a disgruntled star than a losing/tanking atmosphere like Philly, especially if our young squad can make the playoffs.  They may be as flexible as we are right now, but their losing ways will have an effect on how their perceived throughout the league.
